You often hear that the end of capitalism would mean more time to make art

But what would that art be like? I’d like to propose some directions for art after petro-capitalism, under ecosocialism

Principles: maximalism, organic materials, communally integrated

1) High fashion ImageImageImageImage
Festive/ceremonial costume design can be the jumping off point for much new exploration in fashion

It’s a transhistorical feature of communal celebrations, new versions of which will emerge as our economy shifts to post-industrial, democratic forms of production, esp agriculture ImageImageImageImage
2) Architecture

“Petro-capitalist modernism” values only profit maximization & is entirely reliant on artificially cheap energy for its design & construction. The results are 👎

Natural materials & skilled human labor can surpass it for beauty, interest, & functionality w/ ease ImageImageImageImage

The Science is wrong: it's soil, not oil.
A thread about #ClimateChange.🧵

TL;DR:
- Corporate green solutions are shams
- Promote gardening if you care about fossil fuels
- An accounting chicanery keeps natural emissions out of view
- The hockey stick is actually about canopy loss
- Switching to alley cropping would reverse it
Not that long ago, I'd have told you that we'd be better off living in edible landscapes to maximize our resiliency and minimize our energy use. I still think this today, but for different reasons.

Just as the #Ukraine crisis has been a wake-up call for societies that rely heavily on Russian energy exports and #FossilFuels generally, it also highlights another environmentally and geopolitically disastrous addiction: artificial fertilizers. A 🧵... 1/18
As @michaeltanchum notes, Russia is the world’s largest fertilizer exporter, meaning that "fertilizer represents one of the greatest vulnerabilities for both Europe and Africa."
mei.edu/publications/m…
Modern agriculture is hooked on fertilizers. And not without reason: artificial fertilizers helped send crop yields exploding as the world's human population quadrupled over the past 100 years.

Every company + their (office) dog has mission/vision/values statements which do little more than gesture toward some idealized company culture

At @shinebootcamp we use a Holistic Context instead

This framework goes beyond symbolism to actually guide decision making

🧵
A Holistic Context is a framework for decision making that's socially, environmentally + economically sound in the short + longterm

Developed by @AllanRSavory an HC can be applied to agriculture, communities, orgs + even families

Here's an example from @VeryEdibleGarde

1/ Mindmap-like diagram of a Holistic Context from Very Edible
A Holistic Context succeeds where mission/vision/values fall short: Application

Eg. @shinebootcamp's Holistic Context empowered us to
- make exceptions to our deferral policy
- get our $ in order
- challenge perfectionist tendencies
- take innovative approaches to async work

#Permaculture should be viewed as a dynamic social movement that can provide a vision for radical transformation of human societies… As a system based on cooperation and solidarity among humans and non-human nature, permaculture offers a radical reimagination of the possible.”
Of course, there are many things to add from a critical and nuance-seeking perspective— that would start with the truthiness of stating how #permaculture is a historical intellectual artifact and practice with its own biases and blind spots built in. Just like any design practice
But, as a “toy model” to be reckoned with and revised, it’s offers a damn fine integration of practical protocols with a general ethics. Now let’s get about the revision work..

It is very easy and enjoyable to start trees from seed. Here is a mini forest of American Persimmons that I started from seed a few years ago. #Permaculture #TreeCrops
I find that most tree seedlings are very tolerant of growing in a crowded setting for their first and sometimes into their second year.
Here is a picture of the Persimmon seedlings after they had gone dormant by the following fall. Look how well they did, most are close to 12 inches tall.

A few years ago I was a typical liberal, edging towards full hippy (🌻side note: the hippies were right about almost everything 🌺 ;-) I read @kdrum and @joshmarshall. I studied #permaculture.
When I heard about “bathroom bills” in North Carolina, I thought “Oh those bigoted folks over there, they’re all worked up about nothing!” I casually conflated transgender rights with gay rights.
(I hadn’t checked in with my gay friends from college, to see what they thought about this. I should have.)
