It's #penecost Sunday so here are some thoughts from a queer, Anabaptist, trans woman with an Evangelical and Vineyard background about that.
1/🧵
At #pentecost the Holy Spirit was "poured out" on the existing group of Jesus' followers confirming and empowering them in the ministry of bringing God's Kin-dom. It was a distinctive thing that happened to and for that community. 2/🧵
I will talk about the empowering part in a second but first the confirming bit:
At Pentecost the community recovered the Holy Spirit confirming to themselves and one another that they really were tasked with Jesus' mission. 3/🧵

We really do observe this #Pentecost in the midst of a pandemic. The pandemic of #COVID19 is real. It is painful. And we pray that scientists and researchers and all of the folk who are working hard will find a way to bring this pandemic to an end.
But there's another pandemic, not of the viral kind, but of the spiritual kind. It is a pandemic of the human spirit, when our lives are focused on ourselves, when the self becomes the center of the world and of the universe. And it may be even more destructive than a virus.
This pandemic of self-centeredness, if you will, has been the root cause of every humanly created evil that has ever hurt or harmed any child of God or even the earth itself.

Today is #Pentecost, the feast when Christians remember a new movement of the Holy Spirit to bring Christ's own life to all people, ending an old order founded on division and replacing it with a unified diversity that was (is) like a hurricane, like a holy fire.

Now,
I have long planned to share big news today. My first book, THE FACE OF THE DEEP, is being re-released from @David_C_Cook this August. It will feature a new cover, an *incredible* new audio version (with original music), and more. But then this week happened.
I have watched this nation grappling with her demons. It's a fight long overdue. And I have debated--hard--whether to say anything about this. Why should I ask you to buy a book by some pale man from the dark woods when people burn cities today and scream the grief of centuries?

Gospel: Today we celebrate #Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit enabled the disciples to speak in many languages. Jesus's disciples were able to speak, hear and understand. But how can you understand the Spirit if you don't speak justice, or don't hear these words: "I can't breathe." Image
If you weep over the death of Jesus, who had a cross pressed down upon him and cried out "I thirst," but don't weep over the death of #GeorgeFloyd, who had a knee pressed down upon him and cried out, "Water," how will you be able to hear the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit asks you to listen to this voice today.

“And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his OWN native language?”

“Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, ...
... Cretans and Arabians we hear them telling in - our own tongues - the mighty works of God.”

On #Pentecost Sunday these are the dreams I dream:

I dream of a church that is a city of refuge and a shelter from the storm.

I dream of a church that is a pioneer in the way of peace and never again a chaplain to the masters of war.
I dream of a church that excels in contemplative practices and contemplative stances.

I dream of a church that is at home in God’s good world instead of huddled anxiously at the departure gate.

I dream of a church where faith and science are not at odds.
I dream of a church that is conservative because there are wisdom traditions worth preserving.

I dream of a church that is progressive because the journey is ongoing.

I dream of a church that is a viable alternative to soulless secularism.

If you aren’t sure what #Pentecost means for you or the world, I wrote this book for you.

The Holy Spirit is your life, guide, & heritage, weaving you with all existence, and the perfect seal of Jesus. Returning to the great secret is the work of life, and the Way of Christ. Image
We learn to know the Spirit as a whole Person by becoming whole through his work. Because he is the Sustainer of all, we can meet him in creation, in our holy writings, in our communities, in our own inner being.
Life in the Holy Spirit is like learning to understand a language you already speak.
