Just 56 years ago, Congress took the monumental step of passing the #EqualPayAct of 1963 because women deserve equal pay for equal work. At the time, women were paid just 59% of what men made and while the gender gap has decreased, it is still far too wide. 1/
In 2017, women were paid just 80% of what men were paid.
Until everyone in our nation receives equal pay for equal work – regardless of gender, sex, age, ethnicity or language – our fight isn’t over. 2/

#EqualPayDay should not be a thing. Not in 2019. I’d like to leave to future generations the belief that when we say we hold these truths to be self evident that all are created equal, America’s promise is backed up by America’s word.
Let’s also acknowledge that when we talk about equal pay, that number is different for women of color. That widening gap, again in 2019, is not the America we should leave to our children.

On average, women are paid eighty cents on the dollar compared to their male counterparts. In Virginia, that number is $0.78. It’s not right, and we need to do more to achieve #EqualPay across the country. Let’s start by passing the #PaycheckFairnessAct. #EqualPayDay
Let’s also recognize that this disparity is even greater for women of color. #EqualPayDay for Black women will fall on August 22nd, followed by Native American women on September 23rd, and Latino women on November 20th.
We know that the gender pay gap exists all across the economy, stemming from a number of factors including discrimination, implicit bias, barriers to entry and advancement in certain fields, and the responsibilities of parenting that disproportionately fall to women.
