Just to give you all some insight on how thin things are in the RPG business, in 2 days, I am going to release the PDF and PoD version of a 32 page #Pathfinder2E adventure that I wrote, set in my own personal setting of Eventide! I am not sure this product will break even. 🧵
I have cut just about every corner that I can. I wrote it and I did the maps and layout. Between new, original art and hiring an experienced editor, I spent $2,500. I make about $6.50 per PDF or PoD that I sell (roughly). To break even, I will need to sell 384 copies.
But that does not count my time spent making it. At all. I easily spent 80 hours writing, developing, playtesting, and laying out this adventure. To cover costs and for me to make minimum wage, the number I will need to sell jumps to over 600.

Scrap minions, do hazards. So, Runelords is responding to @DanTalksGames who I almost always agree with, and to this point, still do. However, the people Dan is fed up with are on to something.

Welcome to today's thread: Hazard a Guess #Pathfinder2e
The average player, informed by video games and movies expects the bosses to carry narrative weight. What they fail to understand, and oh my god, does most of Dungeon RPG laymen fail to understand is that what the game balances and what narrative weight suggests aren't congruent
In fact, what PF2e players forget is that the boss they are expecting to fight and struggle again is only four levels ahead of them in extreme situations and sometimes, yeah, it works, but only if the GM is a very tactical thinker and there's not too many wildly unlucky rolls.

Welcome to part 2 of yesterday's 🧵, today's title "Swashbuckle BETTER".

People playing #pathfinder2e's Swashbuckler don't consider any options beyond Acrobat for archetypes and each swashbuckler has pretty potent options, especially when using free archetype.
For Wit & Braggarts: Marshal - The skill boost to their chosen skill not only frees up a skill increase, it coordinates directly with the Inspiring or Dread Marshal stances. One for All Wit Swashbucklers are right at home with the tactical feats like To Battle and Cadence Call.
For Gymnasts: Quite obviously, Wrestler, athletics gets a bump but this remains fairly viable for one handed weapon specialists, and it inflicts so many wonderful status effects while controlling enemy movement it is just fun.

You know what, here's my #Pathfinder2e post for today:

You're playing Swashbuckler wrong. If you think it's just rogue + fighter with more steps its because you are impatient and have no idea what you're doing.

Welcome to today's thread: "It's Not Just Swagger".
The criticism that I see about swashbuckler is that you have to do the constant rotation of gain panache, finisher round after round, but that's actually not true, the mechanics of the class try to persuade you to stay in panache mode as long as you can be.
First, the added precision damage from Precise Strike, the increase to movement speed, and the bonus to performing panache actions are all mechanical incentive to stay in panache until the right moment and then use a Finisher.

Well, what's the right moment? Well, let's examine:

1/ #Pathfinder2e Design Musings- Balance and texture often get conflated but are two very different things. Balance speaks to a system's sustainability and quality; how well and how long can people play this game before they start running into systemic issues that affect (cont.)
2/ their experience, particularly as it relates to their interactions with the GM or other players. Strong math and a consistent and reliable framework can achieve balance and function in a variety of different environments. Sometimes you'll get the complaint that balance (cont.)
3) homogenizes the gaming experience. But a homogenous experience is actually speaking to the texture of the game. A game that everyone plays and Interacts with in exactly the same way can be balanced and also homogenous (sometimes interpreted as "boring"), but those are (cont.)

Alright, let me break it down here into a few very simple steps.

Pathfinder 2E Character Creation in 7 simple tweets!
#Pathfinder2E
Step 1: Envision your character!

Flip through the books, looking at the ancestries and classes. Imagine how they might come together to create your PC! Alternatively, draw from fiction or your imagination to get started.

Chat with the group about your idea to make a fun party.
Step 2: Pick your Ancestry

- Record its basic stats and pick your boosts (remember you cannot double up)
- Pick a heritage and record its bonuses.
- Decide upon a single 1st level feat and record its details.

All of these should help flesh out your character image.

So, there are a lot of folks out there looking to give #Pathfinder2E a try, and I've been seeing this question quite a bit

Where do I start?

Well, let me help you on your quest, and please feel free to share this far and wide! 🧵1/12 Image
If you're experienced with RPGs pick up the Pathfinder Core Rulebook! It has all the rules for players and GMs to get started, including character creation, playing the game, designing adventures, and even a primer on the World of Lost Omens (our setting)! 🧵2/12 Image
If you plan on being the Game Master, might I also recommend picking up 1 or more of the Pathfinder Bestiaries! Each contains hundreds of monsters to add to your game, from familiar critters like vampires and minotaurs to beasts from our world, like the Leshy and Proteans! 🧵3/12 Image

For anyone who is migrating to #Pathfinder2e from #dnd5e, I've been running adventure paths for almost a decade now and have read through or ran all the 2e adventure paths. TLDR they are all extremely high quality, but have pros and cons. Here is a quick review of them: 1/x
Age of Ashes: The first adventure path released in 2e and a quintessential adventure. While I enjoyed parts of this adventure, they hadn't quite nailed down encounter balance yet and it can get *very* lethal. 2/x
Extinction Curse: This path is kind of broken into two separate parts, both of which are really good but don't really play well with each other. The initial premise of a traveling circus run by the PCs is great but gets abandoned halfway through for a very interesting plot. 3/x

With a lot of people talking about moving to #Pathfinder2e, as a #dnd player that started playing Pathfinder about a year ago, I thought I would share a few resources that I found helpful. Others can feel free to add to this as well 😊

A short thread

Pathfinder's rules are available free online! While I, personally, found it difficult to learn the system this way (just the way I learn), it is still nice Paizo removed the barrier of purchasing the book. You can find them here!

Roll20 supports Pathfinder modules in the same way it supports dnd modules. On #OnO, we are playing our version of Strength of Thousands. Roll20 has all the maps, character art, and handouts for the module for GM ease if that tickles your fancy

I'm choosing violence today as we talk #ttrpgs.

I hate when 1 player out of a group of 4 to 6 gives me pages upon pages of backstory, and it doesn't matter what system they do it in. Whether it's #dnd or #pathfinder2e, I don't like it.

Welcome to today's 🧵:
"About Me"
Whether in an established setting or an original setting, the GM knows the contents of the game they have in mind pretty well (or should know). Players, on the other hand should be provided an overview and background of the contents of the game (story).
Let's say it's a table of 5 players and a GM, each with different interests, experience levels, playstyle, and availability. The 5 go off and figure out character ideas after the GM pitches the concept. 4 come back with ideas and questions. The 5th player returns with a character

I made the mistake of looking at the #dnd next subreddit, and apparently it's every player and GM's fault that they don't know what to do with gold.

Here's why that's not actually accurate. Welcome to the MicroEconomicon: a #ttrpg thread about all your damn gold.
Designing currency and wealth mechanics in any game is a challenge depending on the route you go with. Games that use abstracted currency tend to suffer less of it because they have, through abstraction, emphasized that wealth will not be granular, nor will it be a major focus.
Games like D&D or #Pathfinder2e where you track each copper, silver, gold, and platinum piece (or Nocticula forbid electrum) are telling you every piece of currency matters. In Princes of the Apocalypse, you crack open a tomb and voila, 600 gold is yours (or at least 150 of it).

I want to highlight this particular tweet, because I think explaining what #pathfinder2e does in terms of good encounter design will help extrapolate on the points I made in my Aesthetic of Numbers thread yesterday. #ttrpg #dnd
The first thing to make clear is, when it comes to encounter design in TTRPGs, I'm not suggesting what is desired is some sterile idea of encounter progression. I'm not trying to railroad encounters, or remove any semblance of unpredictability.
What I would posit, however, is that there are 'good' kinds of unpredictability, and 'bad' kinds of unpredictability. Good design enables 'good' unpredictability, while minimising unpredictability that is frustrating and causes problems rather than is something to be leaned into.

This is one of the main reasons I stopped GMing #dnd 5e and switched to #pathfinder2e, one of my major beefs with the culture around the game, and why I'm so vocal in my criticism of it:

5e is a very difficult game to GM and many players don't understand why. LONG 🧵
If you want to run the game with any mechanical integrity, you spend half the time compensating for rules that just aren't there, and the other half wrestling with the rules that ARE because they're poorly tuned, such as CR and class balance.
The common advice is to just fudge the numbers without players noticing, but having since played games where I DON'T have to fudge them to make an encounter work the way I intend, this feels like apologia for bad design.

I'm usually very positive about #pathfinder2e, but I've decided in fairness to my followers and people who see me annoyingly pop up on #TTRPG Twitter, I'm going to talk about some things I DON'T like about 2e. 🧵
Some stipulations:

1. I won't pick obvious common complaints, like the big three 'undertuned' classes (alchemist, warpriest, and witch), or crafting rules being boring, because we all know those. Also crafting is getting new rules in an upcoming supliment, which brings me to...
2. I won't pick anything that could just be fixed by adding more content (such as 'I wish x had more feats') or variant rules. I'm talking about intrinsic design issues that could only be fixed by errata, deep mechanics changes, or obvious patch content.

This is the most tacit admission I've seen from an RPG designer of how elitist gatekeeping and grognardism was killing their game.

And I think it's good it was said. 🧵

#dnd #pathfinder2e #TTRPGs
Years ago I made a Reddit post about how I hated the Ivory Tower Design of older systems like 3.5/1e because it was just kind of smug and gatekeeper-y, and it attracted douchebags who's narrative fantasies were inherently tied to the mechanical superiority those games offered.
I got a swathe of people responding saying that was their experience too, and that a big reason they prefer modern games is because it doesn't attract as many assholes. They don't need to gatekeep those games because they inherently deter elitist showboaters.

One of the biggest hurdles I notice a lot of #dnd players seem to struggle with about #pathfinder2e is the concept of an actually accurate encounter building system and I think we need to talk about this because this seems like the biggest cope-cross-Stockholm Syndrome in RPGs🧵
Probably the biggest reason I switched from running 5e to 2e is because of encounter building. The encounter budget and CL (creature level) system in 2e WORKS. Every counter is as easy or difficult as I intend it to be, and creatures are as threatening as I want them narratively
Almost every single 5e DM I speak to says their number one problem is the CR system makes no sense and ends with difficult monsters being trivially easy, and encounters they expect to be cakewalks leading to character deaths if not full-blown TPKs.

Went on a #Pathfinder2e and #StarfinderRPG book binge. It turns out Paizo has been very busy since I initially got these. Sooooo much new stuff to see!
So they have mechs now
The mech rules are pretty clever, managing to take into account even the possibility of playing a Power Rangers Megazord.

For reference, that'd be a Colossal frame with five operators, which means it gets like five actions every turn.

As a huge #pathfinder2e advocate, I'm super glad to see it getting attention, even if it is mostly to spite WotC. While it's trending, I want to throw my own 2c on for people who are considering trying it, starting with one statement:

The game isn't going to be for everyone
2e is a game with set design goals in mind. It aims to make combat tactical. Rules and minutia are an important element of its design. Some will find that overwhelming. Even those who don't and play as close to RAW as possible may find it restrictive and suffocating.
The game is heavily power capped. You can't stack huge damage or use save or suck spells to expedite encounters, and there's lots of caveats to prevent cheese. Players who's enjoyment comes from powergaming and emergent gameplay won't find it catering to them at all.

Okay, so maybe some unpopular things I'm about to say about #dnd5e and #pathfinder2e . This is just from my experience and I wonder how other people feel.
The first game I played in was in 2016, it was Pathfinder and it was being run by a World of Warcraft Guildmate. My wife and I joined and it was a terrible experience. He was a bully, allowed the experienced players take advantage of us.
The rules changed depending on who did what. The Ranger grabs my Halfling Bard, puts him on the bar counter and forces a bottle of mead down my throat - that's fine. I try to defend myself, but the checks I was trying to do were not allowed.

@Izsisu challenged me to see how many Pokemon I could build with #pathfinder2e rules, so we'll see how many I can do. #PF2PokemonChallenge. We'll go in order by number, and usually do the evolved forms at the same time. Reply with your own ideas for other builds! We start with:
#PF2PokemonChallenge #1 Bulbasaur pokemon.com/us/pokedex/bul… (as well as ivysaur and venusaur). Lotus leshy druid with Grasping Reach for vine whip, weapon storm (leaf-shaped slashing weapon of choice) for razor leaf, and searing light for solar beam.
#PF2PokemonChallenge #4 Charmander pokemon.com/us/pokedex/cha… (as well as charmeleon and charizard). Ifrit kobold, elemental (fire) sorcerer for attacks like fire spin, ember, and flamethrower.
