I moved back to Bute this Summer to a brand new development of #Passivehouse homes. Not only is the view spectacular but having no central heating has cut our energy use significantly. Our community is starting to come together and I can’t wait to see what’s next. Image
Our houses use solar gain from sunlight to capture heat inside our superbly well insulated homes. We are still getting used to how it works, due to the position of the houses some are warmer or cooler than others.
As these houses have been built here in Scotland, a wood burning stove has been added for additional warmth when needed. It is also v v pretty to watch. Image

@buildingphysics @PassiveHouseBB @the_iPHA @phplusmag 1/6 #Ongrid or #offgrid is not an inherent part of the #passivehouse standard. You can do whatever you want. That said: Our *recommendation* is to install renewable generation and to connect to the grid.
@buildingphysics @PassiveHouseBB @the_iPHA @phplusmag 2/6 Why not inherent?Because it's of minor importance. The solution of the climate-crisis is to reduce climate-gas emissions as far as possible (to almost zero in 50yrs).This is best done by improving efficiency (a factor 10 is doable). #Passivehouse concentrates on this potential
@buildingphysics @PassiveHouseBB @the_iPHA @phplusmag 3/6 This would be sufficent to solve the problem, because there are enough renewable resources for supply of the remaining very low demand (1/10). But: To reach the goal even faster, we support introducing renewable energy fast.

@WolfgangFeist points out that energy services (and GDP) have been increasing significantly in Germany, even as total primary energy use has been going down, thanks to efficiency improvements. That's to be celebrated. @the_iPHA

kicked off his press conference just now with quote by Carl Sagan about our planet Earth: "It's the only home we have...there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves."

1/4: It's good to see the results of such POE's published. It would have been good to see direct measurements of other potential toxins compared as well.

2/4: IAQ study this is based on, you'll also see an energy comparison in which the Passive House/MVHR designs also performed better.

But I'd also encourage you to read the engineer's note at the end of the study. Natural ventilation does have challenges during the coldest &...
3/4: hottest parts of the year (including occupant perceptions). However, those challenges can potentially be addressed & we shouldn't automatically write off natural ventilation solutions.

Mixed mode solutions are another option. We've designed Net Zero ready schools using...

Belated posts from @CABECdotorg conference: Keynote from @CalEnergy Commissioner McAllister told us we need to double our efficiency by 2030. 1/
Looked ahead to what this means for 2019 code cycle.... (which is starting to look kinda familiar..) 2/
And then he actually said it....(drumroll please.) The California Energy Commission will be looking at including alternate ratings, incl. #PASSIVEHOUSE, in the 2020 code cycle. (And he didn’t drop the mike, but should have!) 3/ @CABEC dot .org
