El 6 de diciembre de 1912 un equipo de egiptólogos alemanes liderados por Ludwig Borchardt encontraba el busto de Nefertiti, esposa real del faraón Akhenaton. Su momia aun no se ha localizado. 
El busto fue entregado al patrocinador de la expedición, Jacques Simon, quien lo exhibió durante los siguientes 11 años en su residencia privada. Años más tarde fue reverenciado por Hitler y escondido de las bombas aliadas en una mina de sal.
