1/ If you're an @apsfyi customer you should pay close attention this week. Your elected utility regulators @CorpCommAZ will cast a *MAJOR* vote that determines if your electricity rates go UP. A 🧵👇
2/ One BIG question is what regulators will do about the Four Corners Coal Plant. @apsfyi wants to raise customer rates by ~$400 million to pay for pollution controls installed at the plant. These costs represent ~40% of @apsfyi’s requested rate hike.
3/ For the history buffs, these costs have actually been the subject of at least 3 major proceedings spanning years, but so far @CorpCommAZ has not made a decision on them.

THREAD: About how Native voices are silenced and tribal sovereignty overruled by tonight's federal execution of #LezmondMitchell taking place over the objections of his and his victims' tribe (#Navajo). People from diverse tribal nations are calling on 45 to commute the sentence.
“To carry out Lezmond Mitchell’s execution, despite the profound infringement on tribal sovereignty that his case represents, would be a grave injustice,” by @NavajoCouncil delegate Carl Slater via @nytimes: nytimes.com/2020/08/19/opi…
“The cultural values of Navajo Nation specifically disavow murder as punishment. No one will be made whole by Mr. Mitchell’s execution,” writes Barbara Creel, Director of the Southwest Indian Law Clinic and law professor at the University of New Mexico. medium.com/@creelesq/sche…

All Americans deserve the same opportunities, privileges, and freedoms. On a day where we celebrate #America, I’m equally torn between pride and guilt. And just returning from a @USCG deployment to land-locked #NavajoNation, I’m still grasping to find the right words...

A 🧵 1/
At the request of Navajo Nation’s government, FEMA mobilized to support the #COVID19 response on the ground. More resources were needed and agencies – including the #CoastGuard – were asked to help. And I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to answer that call. 2/
My eyes are now wide open to the fact that the basic rights and privileges extended to most American citizens are not enjoyed equally by all. And in an era where we’re working to stop an invisible enemy like COVID-19, all Americans deserve an equal chance at survival. 3/

The death toll on #NavajoNation has reached 298 due to #COVID19. That’s 298 Navajo lives including 5 Medicine People gone w/in 2.5 MONTHS. Each night I shed tears for my people as I read my Nation’s daily reports - it’s not easy learning of new deaths that could’ve been prevented
I type updates to keep folks informed hoping they, too, recognize why it’s so concerning for a Native community fighting so hard for the sacred knowledge & teachings that we have left & MUST protect, especially in my Navajo community where we’re doing all we can to combat
this monster but it’s still taking precious lives, precious loved ones. It’s especially hard knowing that over 65% of these deaths due to COVID are our elders 60+ years old - our Cheiis & Másánís who we’re still learning so much from. Másánís are still teaching us how to

The crisis on the #NavajoNation is hundreds of years in the making, dating back to the ethnic cleansing policies of Abraham Lincoln. But the US thinks these problems can be solved w/ charity rather than dealing justly w/ the Doctrine of Discovery & our country's genocidal history
The #COVID19 pandemic has clearly exposed the systemic inequalities that have existed in the USA since its founding, not only throughout Indian country, but in all other marginalized communities throughout the nation.
I invite you to learn more about my independent campaign for POTUS. My vision is to build as nation where We the People truly means #AllThePeople.

1/ Covid (@UCSF) Chronicles, Day 36
After stats, a grab bag today – stuff that I’m reading, hearing & otherwise thinking about.

@UCSFhospitals stable, w/ 17 cases, 4 intubated. Last 1200 tests (PCR) @ucsf: 1% positive. Still only 1 death since start, 41 recovered & discharged.
2/ SF: 1233 cases, up 2(!). Hospitalizd pts flat. 21 deaths in SF, up 1 in last wk. Nice piece @TheAtlantic on SF’s success in Crushing the Curve bit.ly/3apa7Xj Below, reaction when @LondonBreed banned crowds (early March), canceling @warriors hoops. Gutsy & life-saving.
3/ @tomaspueyo’s “Hammer & the Dance” is essential reading re: what comes next bit.ly/34Ryhsk. His new piece @Medium, “Learning How to Dance,” is Part 1 in brilliant primer on lessons from other nations re: controlling Covid in tricky next phase bit.ly/34Uhdls
