India's #NationalWarMemorial look at this journey.
Around #1960s armed forces first proposed a War Memorial. But Nothing Happened. @narendramodi @vikramsampath @sanjeevsanyal @anujdhar @seriousfunnyguy @ARanganathan72 @Rajeev_GoI
In 1972 #AmarJawanJyoti was buit 'under' India gate's arch to honour only 1971's war soldiers. But No #NationalWarMemorial
In 2006 there was plan to bulit #NationalWarMemorial but it was cancelled. Reason for that 'as
Heritage Committee said' was
"the wall would obstruct the view of India Gate."

The flame of #AmarJawanJyoti is not being extinguished. It is being merged with flame at #NationalWarMemorial. It was an odd thing to see that the flame at Amar Jawan Jyoti payed homage to martyrs of 1971 & other wars but none of their names are present there: GoI Sources
The names inscribed on the India Gate are of only some martyrs who fought for the British in the World War 1 & the Anglo Afghan War & thus is a symbol of our colonial past: GoI Sources
The names of all Indian martyrs from all the wars, including 1971 & wars before & after it are housed at the National War Memorial. Hence it is a true 'Shraddhanjali' to have the flame paying tribute to martyrs there: GoI Sources

Proud to have steered the creation of #NationalWarMemorial from design selection to construction, as Chief of @HQ_IDS_India.

On this INDEPENDENCE DAY, posting some interesting facts in this thread about construction of this @salute2soldier ImageImageImageImage

Many insisted on locating it in military area in Delhi Cantonment, as no land was available in central Delhi.

PM @narendramodi had the vision of locating it at India Gate (only a PM could've given this spot), as it would attract tourists from other all over the world Image

Constructed over 40 acres land next to India Gate, initially the Central Vista Committee approved a height of 1.5 mtrs only for central pillar.

When all efforts failed, sr officers of CVC & others were invited on site. Realising the importance, they assented to 15 mtr. Proud Image

Had the opportunity to visit the #NationalWarMemorial in Delhi for the very first time & that too in the company of 1st course (J) NDA veterans.
Serene, powerful & beautifully laid out this Memorial perfectly captures the pathos of a soldier’s sacrifice for the nation.
Having accompanied my father to war memorials for Indian soldiers, across the UK, France & Flanders it was indeed a moving experience to finally experience this much overdue homage to our fallen men on Indian soil - incidentally, the Memorial was first proposed in 1960!
The architects, the horticulturalists & of course the political will to see the concept finally brought to fruition must be commended for this beautiful, emotion evoking piece of architecture।

As the #NationalWarMemorial is inaugurated, it becomes important to put this in perspective. During my tenure as the army chief, I had written to the then PM on multiple occasions to give the soldiers their due & build the war memorial. (1/n)
Unfortunately, my requests fell on deaf ears & a helpless man offered little explanation to why we couldn’t build a memorial. Today @RahulGandhi & his party must explain why we could do something in 5 years, but, it couldn’t be done by the @INCIndia for decades (2/n)
Before some of you accuse me of politicking, please look at an article from 2013, where in an interview I had mentioned these issues with the UPA. bit.ly/2EeCCsz (3/n)
