Diana Garlington fondly recalls the last Thanksgiving she spent with her daughter, Esscence T. Christal. "We laughed, danced, reminisced & ended with taking our family photo. She clung tightly to my arm and insisted on sitting on my lap for what would be unreadily our last time.”
The following day, Esscence was killed in a drive-by shooting, leaving behind a young son. She was just 21. The pain of Esscence’s death is worsened by the fact that her case remains unsolved. “Since her demise, she has been left in a file and given a number,” Diana said.
In the 3,431 days that Diana has gone without answers about Esscence’s killing, she has worked with organizations such as RI Coalition Against Gun Violence, One Gun Gone, and Moms Demand Action to support gun violence survivors.

My State of the Union guest, M’kiyah Martin, is a 14-year-old gun violence prevention advocate and student from South Philadelphia who, like many young Americans, has experienced the effects of gun violence in her community as her teenage cousin was shot and killed in 2018. #sotu Image
We often hear about the lives that gun violence takes each day, but it’s less often we hear about the survivors – the injured, the traumatized, and the families – like M’kiyah – friends and communities who are left to deal with the physical and emotional costs of gun violence.
This week is also the second National Gun Violence Survivors Week. I am hopeful that M’kiyah’s attendance and her story will remind others in Washington of the grave task we have at hand to prevent gun violence in our communities. #MomentsThatSurvive

I don’t remember my mom, Joyce, at all. I was only 20 months old when she shot & killed herself.

My friend @ELaffGarb. There are few people in my life that I know who would legit drop everything and come running to help me. Erica is one of those people. She called me on what would’ve been my mom’s 63rd birthday. Erica say on the phone
With me for 30 minutes and I hardly said a word. I could barely breathe. But E knew how I felt without me having to verbalize it. She kept reminding me to breathe. She helped me get through that shitty moment.

40 years ago, she left a note … drove on the freeway … pulled over and sat in the car by herself. She put the black revolver to her head and pulled the trigger. My mom, Joyce, was only 27 years old. everytown.org/tribute/khary-…
She was pronounced dead at 8:34 a.m. “Bullet wound of head … shot self with revolver” is what the death certificate says. 40 years … I have a lifetime of memories clouded with pain rather than a lifetime of memories of her and I. everytown.org/tribute/khary-…
She, like far too many others, was consumed with a debilitating amount of depression that lied to her. Depression made her think the world, my world, would be better off without her. She was wrong about that. I intimately know what those dark moments are like;
