We've created a short brief on what rape culture is, and, most importantly, how each of us can help #EndRapeCulture in Namibia.
Please help us share these important notes!
#MeTooNamibia
To #EndRapeCulture, we need to understand what it is, what causes it and the ways in which it manifests in our society.

These graphics help explain Rape Culture.
But, understanding Rape Culture may not always be enough for us to act.

Statistics from the Namibian Police (as published by @theconfidente) paint a horrifying [and yet, probably understated] image of the extent of SGBV in Namibia.

While we agree that we need to do more in order to fight the sexual violence that terrorizes our communities, we would be remiss to ignore the impact that the social media conversation, as well as #MeTooNamibia has had on our people.
Since inception in May, we have (co)-hosted four conferences on sexual violence, assisted various survivors in opening cases and receiving psychosocial support, convened an association of organisations willing and ready to assist more survivors 1/2
...and most importantly, started important conversations on sexual violence, consent, victim blaming and shaming, toxic masculinity and related matters. 2/2

Sexual violence against minors remains a grave concern and a harrowing crisis.
Apart from the increasing frequency, the brutality and complexity of the reported cases continues to leave many in shock. Image
Worse, first responders who hold problematic mindsets and beliefs continue to silence children survivors by blaming and ostracizing them.
It also does not help that professionals who deal with children are not adequately trained on the provisions of the Child Care and Protection Act, the Combating of Rape Act, as well as the Immoral Practices Amendment Act.

If you aren’t here, now would be a great time to head over to the Peter Katjavivi Lecture Hall 1.

The UNAM SRC President opens by encouraging conferences such as this, and urging us to have these conversations more often.

One of our activists, @eenhanas_finest, penned an article in @TheNamibian, in which he gives a summation of the #MeTooNamibia Movement. Image
@eenhanas_finest puts it that the #MeTooNamibia Movement is a “fresh approach to an old crisis”, and that it is one whose center is encouraging survivors of sexual violence to report their cases, and to seek psychosocial support.
The article properly highlights the role of the #MeTooNamibia Movement, and hopes to remind that no one is ever alone.

Tomorrow morning, we’re standing with a survivor whose accused, Bradley Coleman, has a bail hearing at the Katutura Magistrates Court.
We stand with the survivor, and we are against Coleman receiving bail.
#MeTooNamibia holds a watching brief on the cases which have been reported through our channels.
This helps ensure that cases progress in reasonable fashion, and that where justice is due, it is served.
Our partners are in constant contact with the Police, and will ensure that cases have the best prosecutors.
