How are we to respond to the McCarrick Report? Recalls 2019 retreat of US bishops preached by Fr. Cantelamessa.

#USCCB20.
+Gomez:

Pope Francis ensured McCarrick Report was "thorough and detailed." It will take time to reflect upon it.

Not the result of a single failure, but many failures, rooted in clericalism.

How might we rethink our relationships?

The US bishops begin their meetings today — and will discuss the #McCarrickReport. They need to remember that this is not just about McCarrick, but about an ecclesial culture that looked other way, at every opportunity, despite being warned.

There is no single smoking gun; there are decades of smoke in which no one looked for the fire causing it.

The problem is not primarily malice or lies — it's clerical self-protection and ambition. McCarrick's success in the church became his shield against the truth. 2/
And everybody else — lots and lots of bishops — to whom the vague rumors and anonymous reports came was able to decide to dismiss them. And they did, because it was easier by far to brush them away than to turn over the tables in this particular temple. 3/

Realities are greater than ideas.

@Pontifex keeps saying this and I think his understanding of this is something that sets him apart from his immediate predecessors.

This is why his papacy is so necessary right now in this messy world where we live. 1/
The #McCarrickReport, which likely wouldn't have been commissioned (and certainly would never be made public) by his predecessors, shows an institutional Church and 2 popes who placed an idealized vision of Catholicism over the reality of the abuse by leaders in the Church. 2/
I accept at face value the explanation that John Paul II fell prey to the lies of predators like McCarrick & Maciel, and thought they were innocent.

He certainly wouldn't CONDONE abuse. But he clearly placed his trust in clerics over the people of God. 3/

The report reveals that the John Paul II, now a saint, made those appointments despite being warned in 1999 by then-NY Cardinal O'Connor that McCarrick had been subject of anonymous allegations and was known to sleep in same bed as seminarians.

#McCarrickReport also places substantial blame at the feet of four Catholic bishops in New Jersey, where McCarrick had been serving as Archbishop of Newark before being named to Washington.
Archbishop Carlo Viganò, who has blamed Pope Francis for cover-up of allegations against McCarrick, did not follow Vatican instructions to investigate allegations against McCarrick. #McCarrickReport
