Regarding the #MaKhiaBryant incident, if we peel back the curtain we see a child who was acting out over a house cleaning dispute likely due to a lot of pain & dysfunction. Obviously, more than just about house cleaning /1
Why was she and her sister in foster care when the mom is around? What were the circumstances she lived in that shaped her and had her in foster care? What was going on in that foster home? /2
That's not excusing her aggression and we should not because actions have consequences. But it strikes me that there was more than meets the eye that was driving it. /3

VIDEO THREAD: Black Lives Matter activists protested for Ma'Khia Bryant this afternoon outside the Minnesota Governor's mansion in St. Paul.

"Say her name! Ma'Khia Bryant! Say her name! Ma'Khia Bryant!"

#makhiabryant
In addition to policing, speakers focused on the foster care system, which they say can be "genocide" for children.

"A Black child is 42% more likely to die in foster care after they have been removed to so called 'safety and protective custody' just as Ma'Khia Bryant was."
Activists compared police shooting of Ma'Khia Bryan to Kyle Rittenhouse, who left Kenosha unharmed before turning himself in.

"I don't wanna hear about 'this girl had a knife.' She was defending herself. Kyle Rittenhouse wasn't defending himself. He wasn't defending anything."

CRAZYTOWN: Joy Reid says you shouldn't believe anything you hear or see from police about the #MakhiaBryant shooting (which would include body camera footage) b/c it could be proven it was all a lie and the office was unjustified.

Besides, Bryant had cute TikTok videos!
NO JOKE...Joy Reid says knife fights happen all the time and people survive!

Reid's guest then condemned the actions of the police officer b/c it was "child here that was involved in an altercation with someone else."

So kids can wield weapons and you should just let them be?
Joy Reid insinuates the Columbus police officers responding to the scene of the #MakhiaBryant shooting had it out for black people because one of them had a Blue Lives Matter mask.

Reid also doubles on how you can't believe what your eyes tell you b/c...police lie all the time?

Here’s how often each Columbus police officer used force against people from 2001-2018. Some used force at substantially higher rates. But how often were they held accountable? A thread. (1/x)
Regardless of how much force they used, few officers were disciplined. 99% of incidents resulted in no discipline. Even for the officers with the worst records. Among officers who used the most force (40+ cases), only 1 officer was disciplined more than reprimand/counseling.(2/x)
That one officer in the group who was suspended was Adam Coy. But he wasn’t fired until last year when he killed Andre Hill, an unarmed Black man. He was charged with murder in February and facing trial. But this wasn’t a surprise given the data. Let’s take another look... (3/x)

The cops killed #MaKhiaBryant, #AndrewBrown, #DaunteWright & #GeorgeFloyd. Anti-Black media played a role in creating the conditions for these murders.

Here's how newsrooms can stop this ongoing harm now: [A Thread]
Begin your reporting and storytelling by starting with the information and care needs of those directly impacted by these deaths and the systemic racism they reflect. (2/10)
Avoid criminalizing those murdered by the police. Especially avoid criminalizing children. Consider people within the context of systems and histories of harm, power, and oppression. (3/10)

Why we need to talk about policing of ALL Black folks, not just men:

The #SayHerName hashtag (by @sandylocks) was a call for attention to Black women murdered by police i.e. #MaKhiaBryant and how our expectation that this issue only affects Black men misses the full picture.
The African American Policy Forum released a report entitled Say Her Name: Resisting Police Brutality Against Black Women in 2015 to highlight this overlooked issue. Later that same year, #SandraBland died while incarcerated and still ruled a suicide.

.@washingtonpost has been tracking police killings since 2015 and found by 9/2020, 247 women had been killed by police, 48 (19.4%) were Black women. What names do you hear most often or see in a hashtag? Killings of Black women receive less attention.

As we all know, police never hesitate to use lethal force with potentially violent teens.
And just for context, #makhiabryant was two years younger than Kyle Rittenhouse, who was four years younger than Dylann Roof when they committed their crimes.

Makiah Bryant, a 16yo Black girl, was murdered by police who she had called for help. They arrived and instead of breaking up a fight between girls, they shot her 4 times.

The police don’t protect from violence; the police are perpetrators of violence. feministgiant.com/p/essay-fuck-t…
There is a hierarchy of protection: the further we are from wealthy, white, cisgender, heterosexual, able bodied men, the less likely we are to be protected.

I wrote that essay on Sunday, but can post it daily with a new name of a Black or person of colour police kill in the US.
And I don't give a fuck about what police say or their fucked up "reasons" for killing Makiah. They murdered a teenage girl. Who the fuck shoots a girl four times except thugs in a uniform who are licensed to kill? Fuck the police.

(1) Columbus, Ohio: Officer-involved shooting death of 15 year old Ms #MakhiaBryant, 4/20/2021.

(2) Yes, the suspect appeared to hold a knife, while fighting with another girl. (The residence is a foster home and fighting had broken out.)

However, you can hear the same level of screaming/fighting noise after she is shot, so I wonder if other cops were covering that?
(3) Like, usually when people hear shots they stop and seek a place of safety. I want to know how many cops were there and if some were focusing on the other people still fighting. What if one of them turned a gun on the cops? They should have been ready for that possibility.

(1) There was an officer involved shooting (OIS) in Columbus, Ohio today. The deceased was a 15 year old black girl, identified by family members - Police have yet to provide her name to the public.

My comments on this statement from the local Mayor:
(2) As you would expect, people who support the #BlackLivesMatter movement are criticizing Columus, Ohio Mayor Andrew Ginther for aspects of his statement. I took screenshots of it:
(3) Let's go through each point:

"a young woman tragically lost her life"

She's 15, so he should have said girl, female, or person.

For now, the audience holds the Mayor's PD responsible, so he should not have said "lost her life." He should be more neutral at this point.

So while folks are telling us how the Chauvin verdict proves change is here, please note: the Columbus PD killed a 15 yr old girl #MakiyahBryant today. But they didn't even arrest any of the OSU students who were flipping cars and tearing shit up after a damned exhibition game.
Correction to the spelling name of the young woman killed by Columbus Police today. Her name is Ma'Khia Bryant. I used the early hashtag that had it wrong. Wanted to clear it up. Let's say her name and hold up her family as they fight for justice. #makhiabryant
And let me be clear, I am referring to Ma'Khia as a young woman out of respect, but at 15, she was a child.
