44 ounces of #gold are known to have been produced from two shafts at the Voglers Cove Mine which had a 5-stamp mill for separating the gold from its host rock. There is an aggregate quarry at the site now.

There was a rush of prospectors into the area, which is in #QueensCounty between the #Molega and Ponhook lakes. Molega quickly grew from a population of a dozen to over a thousand, and four general stores, a school and three hotels were built within a few years.

While there were several mines in the #Brookfield #Gold District, almost all the gold produced came from the Brookfield mine operated by Wilbur L. Libbey, which was discovered in 1885.

In July 1886, it was acquired by John McGuire and some American associates known as the #Brookfield Milling Company. Under McGuire's management a considerable amount of ore was mined and hauled to #PleasantRiver, #Lunenburg County, for milling.

In 1885 a gold-bearing boulder was discovered in #Blockhouse, #Lunenburg County, but it wasn’t until 1896 that a significant #gold deposit was found. The Blockhouse #Mining Company sank two shafts but the mine closed down not long after.

In 1898 a new owner, T. Foster, took over. The mine had produced 3259 ounces of #gold (worth $5 million at today's prices) by 1902 when it shut down again. It was mined again briefly from 1935-38.

Today the #Blockhouse gold mine is a forest.

Blockhouse is named after forts the British built throughout #NovaScotia and across #Canada. Forts were built in the #Blockhouse/#MahoneBay/#LahaveRiver area after a 1756 raid on #Lunenburg. The blockhouse in #Windsor, #NS, is the oldest in Canada that's still standing.
