Just back from a trip to the village in Pakistani Administered Kashmir the #LondonBridge attacker Usman Khan's family originally came from... He was born in the UK and all the evidence I've seen clearly shows he was radicalised in Britain, but I wanted to find people who knew him
The village is outside the city of Kotli - quite a pretty drive, the white capped mountains in the background are across the Line of Control in Indian Administered Kashmir... Usman Khan was convicted in the UK in 2012 of planning to set up a militant training camp here
We met a man who lived next door to Usman Khan's family home... He remembered Khan visiting as a teen, and they would often discuss religion together... He said Khan was angry with perceived Western injustices in the Muslim world but he tried to convince him to respond peacefully

#LondonBridge debates over prison sentences, parole, are a distraction. Real issue is our laws are unable to cater to new terrorist threat. These are not normal criminals they are traitors and we need new treason laws.

MI5 has identified 23K extremists in UK. 3K "persons of interest" involved in some 500 potential terror plots. It takes 20-25 security personal to monitor ONE individual so max they can subject to 24hr watch at any one time is 50!!! (according to MI5). 2/8
Clearly, this situation is not sustainable and many will slip through the cracks. New laws therefore required to recognise this new and extraordinary security challenge. Traditional offences which Britain charges potential terrorists with are not enough. 3/8

OK, as ever when there's a terrorist incident, people IMMEDIATELY get political... Conspiracy theorists on the left (yes, they exist) are saying #LondonBridge is a false flag on the part of Boris and the Tories, and members on the right are running with this... (1/4)
to make it seem it's a representation of the left, and that this shows a wider incompetence, to the point that there seems to be more tweets with the hashtag #FalseFlag about London from people on the right than on the left... (2/4)
The fact is, as of the moment, we don't know the reasoning behind the attack, so at least until then, don't make uninformed conspiracies that it's some larger plot, as that in essence causes radicalised ideologies, and further attacks... (3/4)

Emergency services attended, including officers from the Met and @CityPolice.

A new #LondonBridge was completed in 1831. It was made of #granite from #Haytor Quarry, which is now part of the #Dartmoor National Park.
Its lamps were made from the melted-down cannons of #NapoleonBonaparte's army.

Prompted by an @IlluminatedRiv post (& a couple of days of #Thames related news), found myself looking last night at #FrostFair pictures. This first from 1677 (source: @MuseumofLondon) below #LondonBridge & frankly a bit hairy in places - look at the people leaving at the stairs
Here’s another picture by the same artist, this time from 1684 showing stalls set up on the ice (funnily enough in about the location proposed for the ill-fated #GardenBridge)
What’s really striking about both of these late 17th century images is the depth to which the river has frozen - how COLD must it have been?? The view below is by Thomas Wyke, again from the winter of 1683-4.
