I'm 45 yo lesbian. I left my country because of homophobia (it's not just mocking, harrasment, lesbians were/are raped in the name of "re-education"). I was told by men that I haven't met the right man yet. Now men who identify as lesbians tell me I haven't tried their girldick. Image
2)That gay man doesn't feel threatened by straight women who identify as gays & because he doesn't feel threatened he has no problem to let men in the lesbian spaces, organizations, events, groups, apps etc. He supports our erasure. The only letter in LGB he cares about is G. Image

On #LesbianVisibilityDay, I share my essay for @aperturefnd on Myriam Boulos' incredible photography. Look at this powerful photograph that illustrates it

Against a purple sky, two naked men tenderly embrace; one is, indeed, whispering, not to us the welcome voyeurs—but into the ear of his beloved.

Juxtapose the delicacy of that moment—men stripped of the confines that patriarchy makes of masculinity—with the altogether more robust, and much more tightly cropped, image of two women kissing. Swallowing each other whole, more like.

📽️ Did you know that the the first lesbian character appeared in a film almost a century ago?

👩‍❤️‍👩 Today, we're marking #LesbianVisibilityDay by looking back at some iconic sapphic moments in cinema and TV.

📺 Here's a brief history of lesbian visibility on screen. 🧵
🇩🇪 The 1929 German 'Pandora's Box' is considered the first film to have a lesbian character.

👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩 A year later, Marlene Dietrich was the first lead actress to kiss a woman in 'Morocco'.

🎞️ But 'Mädchen in Uniform' in 1931 is considered the first lesbian-themed movie.
🚫 But then, in 1934, the Hays Code came into force. It banned any depiction of homosexuality in American films.

🔴 The guidelines effectively removed #LGBTQ+ people from screens everywhere, and any queerness had to be coded.

These are the 4 British law firms being used by 4 Russian oligarchs close to Putin in a co-ordinated legal attack against @CatherineBelton, the author of a landmark book, Putin’s People.

This is @TaylorWessingUK. Apparently they’re great supporters on #mentalhealthawarenessweek. Being sued by a Russian oligarch is a noted booster for one’s mental health, of course. Hope you don’t mind me cc-ing you in @Rubywax.
And this is @CMS_law. Strong on diversity & inclusion & empowering women. But not, god forbid, women who happen to be journalists investigating Russian power

Today is #LesbianVisibilityDay👭

While politics and business get a lot of attention, the world of art is another area where lesbian and queer women often struggle to be seen. From painters 🎨 to photographers 📸, here are 13 artists we think you'll enjoy.

Lubaina Himid (b.1954)

The first Black woman to win the prestigious Turner Prize 🏆, the Zanzibar-born artist blends art with activism, addressing racial politics and the legacy of slavery.

Himid also works as a curator, shining a needed light on underrepresented Black artists
Adejoke Tugbiyele (b.1977)

The US-based 🇺🇸 artist and advocate's work intertwines notions of sexuality, gender, class and economy, often exploring LGBT+ issues and her own identity.

I just found out that this is apparently the only day of the year that I can be observed by the naked eye, or something.

I’m gay! I’m also a researcher (aiming to improve uni life), & I love cats and ducks and wild gardening. 🥰

I realised I was gay when I was 15. Which was... sometimes difficult, especially growing up with half my family believing being gay was one of the worst sins someone could commit.

But love is love, right? And I’m so lucky to have *so much* love in my life. 💖
(And for context, the second photo is me & my partner at Kings College, after we had a beautiful betrothal ceremony in the chapel, with one of our closest friends playing our favourite songs on guitar. Because we have the best people in our lives.)

There was no #LesbianVisibilityDay when I was 16.
I was expelled from my all-girls high school for being a #lesbian & put in a mental hospital for #conversiontherapy.

I became an #LGBT activist to prevent that from happening to other girls like I was.
On #LesbianVisibilityDay I memorialize every #lesbian who died hidden in the shadows because of #homophobia, who was forced into compulsory heterosexuality, who was made to live a lie. You deserved better and we honor you by making a safer world for lesbians now, today. Amen. 💜
One of America's greatest poets was a #lesbian--#AdrienneRich. When she died March 27, 2012, I wrote this tribute to her, illuminating her work and life.
