Just 30 years ago the Daily Mail was discussing the extermination of homosexuality as a ‘hope’.

Me in 1993.
At the time the age of consent for gay men was 21, we could not marry or serve in the army and Section 28, banning the ‘promotion of homosexuality’, was in force.
Our communities were bludgeoned by homophobia and #AIDS for which then there was no effective treatment. Image
The parallels between the media treatment of gay men (in particular) in the late 80s / 90s and trans people now are obvious and chilling.
I fought for gay rights then.
I stand with trans people now. ImageImage

Non-binary and trans people have always been here, in every recorded society – from the ancient world onwards. But why is it that they’re missing from history books more often than not? #LGBTplusHM 1/12 🧵 Illustrated portrait of Civil War soldier Harry J Buford
Perhaps it has something to do with how history is recorded. People from groups that fear being ostracised and persecuted often only reveal their true selves to a few people. The historical visibility of LGBTQ+ people is usually limited as a result. 2/12
Historians are now beginning to look more carefully for these important LGBTQ+ stories. Our understanding of transgender identities has evolved, and it’s now widely accepted that gender identity is separate from gender expression, creating a new context for historical tales. 3/12

🧵 Some advice to companies (and individuals) as we enter “LGBT+” History Month #LGBTplusHM (repurposed from an article I wrote for Pride Month last year):

1) Don't just slap a rainbow on your logo and think that's enough. That's just empty virtue signalling.
2) Stop using the "progress flag" with the extra colours pointing in from one side, pushing the LGB rainbow flag colours out. The standard flag with six colours covers all you need for for gay rights.
3) Don't say or use "Queer". It's a homophobic slur. When Millennials & Gen Z say they've 'reclaimed' it, they are not speaking for the generations of gay men in particular who were on the receiving end of the bullying and abuse that comes along with that word.

At the start of #LGBT+ History Month, we'd like to share the story of a woman doctor who fought for the inclusion of women in medicine, but hid the details of her personal life and her relationship with a woman.
CW: male violence, suicide.

Born in Hastings, Sophia Jex-Blake was refused medical education in England and travelled to the US, only to be refused entry to Harvard. The death of her father forced her to return home before she was able to enrol at Elizabeth Blackwell's new medical college in New York.
She applied to Edinburgh University Medical School, who refused to make arrangements "in the interest of one woman". So she applied with six other women and won admission for the "Edinburgh 7". Edinburgh thus became the first British university to admit women, in 1869.
