Modern conversion therapy is happening in many places in society, including in churches and schools with a "welcoming, but not affirming" approach to LGBTQ2 individuals. #LGBTQ2
This approach says, we welcome you into our faith or school, but membership is conditional on remaining silent, closeted, and invisible with a requirement to live "chaste or celibate" lives.
As one religious leader stated, "It's almost like with one hand you're shaking LGBTQ people by the hand, and with the other you're slapping them in the face."
THREAD 1/9 : In light of recent events, it is important to restate that conversion therapy is a heinous and inhumane practice with no basis in science. We are working hard with partners to stamp out this vile practice.
2/9 Following are the Criminal Code offences that criminalize the behavior associated with conversation therapy.
3/9 Depending on the circumstances of a particular case, Criminal Code offences such as: kidnapping (subsection 279(1)), forcible confinement (subsection 279(2)) and assault (sections 266 to 268) may apply where a person is forcibly compelled to undergo conversion therapy.
City of Vancouver grants 2019 funding to Vancouver Rape Relief as termination funding. VRR is no longer eligible for funding until it makes changes to become aligned with the grant criteria.

Those among us who are not transgender may not understand the enormous symbolic value of this decision. VRR's ongoing and very public refusal to treat transgender women equally has finally been refuted by a public agency as unacceptable.
