BREAKING: my new research on Xinjiang uncovers evidence of birth prevention & mass female sterilization. Findings give strongest proof yet that Xinjiang atrocity fulfills a U.N. Genocide Convention criterion: imposing measures intended to prevent births /1
jamestown.org/wp-content/upl…
Birth control has a long history in China, but evidence from government documents about birth prevention in Xinjiang indicates a ruthless, draconian suppression of population growth that is, frankly, unprecedented. Esp. worrying is evidence of a campaign of mass sterilization. /2
Han Chinese academics have long complained about "excessive" Uyghur population growth, which they social instability and extremist religious thinking. But efforts to make the Han population dominant were set back by higher Uyghur birth rates, esp. in 2010s (chart). /3

Twitter Removes China Misinformation Campaign: after I published the #KarakaxList, a major state media smear campaign against me ensued, and was amplified by 100s of suspicious accounts, including one that impersonated me. nytimes.com/2020/06/11/tec… ImageImage
Global Times smear pieces were re-tweeted 100s of times, by accounts with 0-3 followers, often sexually-suggestive (or at least attractive) user profile pics, very similar messages, etc. I am still trying to get over the fact that this bot called me ugly. Just kidding. Image
Their first strategy was to troll my most tweets - typically of new original research articles, starting w/ my work on parent-child separation in July 2019. When this re-occurred with the China Cables in Nov 2019, I ruthlessly blocked them all. Then, they changed tactics.

We talked to Uighurs imprisoned in re-education camps in Xinjiang, who told us their accounts of fake trials and being forced to choose from a list of crimes.

We identified the location of these re-education camps. (Thread)
We located and verified the camps where the sham trials took place using open source information e.g. satellite imagery, government documents including tender bids and financial plans.
One re-education camp is a former middle school.“The compound was surrounded by high walls,it is approx 4 meters high. On the wall there was barbed wire,” one of the detainees told us. Photos and satellite imagery show the camp´s security features as the witness described.

China has resumed placing tens of thousands of #Uyghurs from #Xinjiang's notorious re-education camps to forced labor in at least 19 provinces around the country, @SCMPNews revealed. scmp.com/news/china/pol…
"Excellent graduates were to be taken on as labourers by various inland governments, in particular, 19 provinces and municipalities," said one source.
According to SCMP, at least 19 provinces and cities have been given quotas to hire Muslim minorities, mostly Uyghurs, who have “graduated” from re-education camps.

Breaking: Beijing shows that it has the #KarakaxList -independently from us. Details of Ms. 布丽提吉·巴拉提, featured in propaganda TV report, were not in any western media or my report, nor in a section of the document that we have made public. Yet she refutes being "interned". Image
She is not mentioned in the document until rows 298 and 590. This means that the Chinese state has the full document, which has not yet been made public.
Link to the TV report via China Daily Twitter account:
In the video, she says she is 46 years old, which is correct. The document says she is permitted to "continue in release" because of her good cooperation with local authorities during release (see below). Refusing to be part of this video would get her sent back to the camp. Image

The leaked #KarakaxList mentions at least 4 “re-education camps” that Uighur detainees were sent to in #Xinjiang.

Together with @CherieChancy and @NaomiConrad, we verified and located the camps using satellite images and governmental documents and bids. (Thread)
We were able to verify and locate two of the “re-education camps” (1+2) mentioned in the #KarakaxList.
And we also located two other camps (3+4), using satellite images and governmental documents, including tender bids and financial plans.
We had a closer look at the largest “re-education camp” mentioned in the leaked #KarakaxList which is based at the south-east corner of an industrial park. (Satellite imagery 26.11.2019).

The leaked document mentioned several re-education camps in Karakax, a county in Xinjiang. We located and verified two of them using satellite images and information from government documents. @bayer_julia talks about the verification process of one:
@bayer_julia Some relatives of these Uighur detainees have moved abroad. They haven’t been able to get in touch with their families in Karakax for years. @NaomiConrad met one of them in person:

*BREAKING*: 3rd MAJOR LEAK from XJ - a detailed list of Uyghurs in re-education, w/ reasons for internment & why they should (not) be released! Same source as #ChinaCables. Unprecedented insight into the minutiae of Xinjiang's internment drive.
MY PAPER: jpolrisk.com/karakax
137 pages, 667 rows & personal details of 2,800 Uyghurs (23.4% of them in camps/prisons): the #KarakaxList presents the STRONGEST EVIDENCE to date that Beijing is actively persecuting normal practices of traditional religious beliefs, in direct violation of its own constitution.
These Uyghurs from Qaraqash (Karakax) are shown to be interned in four main camps, three of which could be identified on satellite and related government documents. I was able to verify the identities of 337 persons in the #KarakaxList through 1000s of secondary gov't documents.
