I see there is a sudden renewed interest in anti-lynching legislation as opposed to mostly crickets last year when Rand Klan Paul filibustered it. Here's a quick thread on where it stands for people who are afraid Juneteenth is distracting from getting it passed ⬇️
Last year's George Floyd #JusticeInPolicing Act included #MVPHarris' Justice for Lynching Victims Act (JFVLA), but it was taken out in this session. The JFLVA is still in the Republicans JUSTICE Act. The House has 2 bills & the Senate has 1 that are still in committees.
In the House, the Emmett Till and Will Brown Justice for Victims of Lynching Act of 2021 is identical to the Senate bill introduced by then Sen #KamalaHarris & co-sponsored by Sen Booker that passed unanimously in the Sen 2X; but it has much fewer co-sponsors than the other bill.

Sen. McConnell has been stalling progress for the American people for far too long.

#COVID19 relief for families and businesses, common sense gun safety legislation, and healthcare protections are just a few of the HUNDREDS of bills awaiting action on his desk.

A list...
It’s been 510 days since the House passed #HR8 -- a common sense, bipartisan, gun safety bill that could save lives.

Still no vote in the Senate.

It’s been over 500 days since the House passed #HR1 to reduce the influence of $$ in our politics, protect our elections, and restore faith in our democracy.

Still no vote in the Senate.

Speaker Pelosi took a blowtorch to the ridiculous assertion by the Trump WH that Trump wasn't briefed orally about Russia putting a hit on our troops in Afghanistan because our intelligence agencies didn't have 100% confirmation.

More 🔥🔥🔥 from #MadamSpeaker's presser below!
Nearly a week since we learned that Russia put a bounty on the head of our troops in Afghanistan, Trump still has had nothing to say to Putin about the spilled American blood on his hands.

So on top of everything else, Trump is also a failed Commander-in-Chief.
With 25 years of experience in intelligence, Speaker Pelosi knows exactly how this kind of actionable information usually comes across when there is a President and Commander-in-Chief who is not invested in letting Putin get away with murder.

Speaking on the Senate floor about the senseless, repeated killings of Black people—including by police—that have led to the massive outpouring of anger we see across the country, & the work ahead to start living up to our ideals of equality and justice. twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
These protests are driven by people, including many young people, who are justifiably sick & tired of the systemic racism behind these killings that is deeply woven in the fabric of our democracy & our history—and rightly believe we are not moving forward nearly fast enough.
One major step we can take is passing the #JusticeInPolicing Act by @SenKamalaHarris and @SenBooker, which among other things would: reform qualified immunity, ban the use of chokeholds, and require deadly force be used only as a last resort.

Today, #GeorgetownLaw Professor Paul Butler is testifying at @HouseJudiciary's hearing on the #JusticeinPolicingAct.

@LawProfButler is a former prosecutor, #RacialJustice scholar and author of "Chokehold: Policing Black Men."

Thread on his powerful opening statement (1/10):
"There has never, not for one minute in American history, been peace between black people and the police," @LawProfButler tells @HouseJudiciary. (2/10)
"The main problem is not bad apple cops. Officers have difficult jobs & many serve with honor and valor. Still almost every objective investigation of a police department finds that police as policy treat African Americans with contempt,” @LawProfButler to @HouseJudiciary.(3/10)

No police officer should have the ability to use grenade launchers, military aircraft, machine guns, or tanks on members of our communities. #DemilitarizeThePolice
Yesterday, the House of Representatives led by @SpeakerPelosi introduced the #JusticeInPolicing Act that will help end the pattern of violence against people of color by law enforcement since the beginning of our nation’s history.
Black people are 2.5 times more likely to be killed by the police. To protect people from police abuse of power, we must begin by demilitarizing the police. statista.com/chart/21872/ma…

The 2nd bill I ever introduced in the Senate was the Police Training and Independent Review Act.

Last week, Sen. Graham objected when I brought this bill up for unanimous consent.

Today, I’m proud that Democrats' #JusticeInPolicing Act includes provisions from my bill.
The #JusticeInPolicing includes provisions of my bill to strengthen accountability & transparency over law enforcement use of lethal force by rewarding states that enact laws requiring independent reviews, criminal investigations and, when necessary, prosecutions.
It’s 2020. We cannot let ourselves accept that in the US, black men & women are still being publicly executed w/o judge or jury in preventable police-involved deaths. It’s past time our country acts to ensure accountability & justice. duckworth.senate.gov/news/press-rel…

We read the #JusticeInPolicing Act as proposed by Senators Booker and Harris. Here is what it does and why we support it (1/12):
The act would enable individuals to recover damages when law enforcement officers violate their constitutional rights, which would open the door for individuals to hold their law enforcement accountable. (2/12)
The act would grant subpoena power to the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, to conduct pattern and practice investigations and provide grants to state attorneys general to conduct pattern and practice investigations. (3/12)
