327-342 million years ago, global sea levels rose and fell many times. This repeatedly flooded #NovaScotia with what we call the Windsor Sea. #NS was near the equator at the time so the sea also evaporated repeatedly in the heat.

The evaporation of sea water left deposits of successive layers of salt. This process was repeated for millions of years until the original salt beds were far below earth’s surface. Subterranean pressures and heat compressed the salt into #NovaScotia’s huge rock #salt deposits.
Mining is part of #NovaScotia’s heritage and many communities benefit from tourism attractions related to historical mining. In fact, this 1889 flyer advertised #gold mines near #Caledonia, #QueensCounty, as tourist attractions to people from Boston!

In the 1740s-1750s, a quarry on #PortHood Island was the main supply of finished/dressed sandstone for #FortressLouisbourg’s window and door casements. About 60 men worked there in summer and the stone was sent by barge through the #StraitofCanso to #Louisbourg.

Many historical #NovaScotia buildings, including the more important buildings at #Louisbourg, were made of stone that was considered somewhat unattractive (i.e. fieldstone or ironstone), so it was often fancied up with granite or sandstone trim.

We can’t be sure without seeing them in person but you're likely right that the pics are coal and gypsum. There's a long history of coal mining there - nearby #CabotLinks golf course is built on a former coal mine. Coal was first discovered there in 1863 and was mined til 1958.
