A game-changing moment for @trussliz.
Rishi thought he'd set a clever trap, but instead presented her with an open goal. Watch the smile, the stiffness disappear, the fluency emerge, the passion grow. That's #LizForLeader authenticity. She needs to find more of that.
#ITVDebate
Appended for those (esp. Labour MPs) who say @trussliz was educated under the Conservatives, so she's trashing Thatcher/Major.
Schools were run by local education authorities, responsible for funding and achievement.
Who controlled Leeds Council 1986-1993?
#ITVLeadershipDebate
It was to liberate schools from local authorities who were failing generations of children that Thatcher/Baker introduced Grant Maintained schools.
Labour came to agree, and adopted this model to establish City Academies.
The Tory/LibDem Coalition expanded academisation further.

"My parents worked hard" is a convenient way for privileged people to frame their lives as an uphill struggle. Most parents work hard but most parents aren't able to provide their kids with vast inheritance, expensive private education and professional connections.

#ITVDebate
We hear a lot about hard work and opportunity but in modern Britain it is parentage and privilege which largely determine progress. You are 60% more likely to be in a professional job if you are from a privileged background, rather than from a working-class background.

It's the second Conservative leadership #ITVdebate tonight & I'll be watching what they say about climate and energy like a hawk

On just before the debate  – news from @metoffice

90% chance of new UK heat record
60% chance of breaching 40C

Live THREAD + couple of previews

1/
Energy bills are almost certain to feature tonight, so let's start by setting the record straight: 94% of the coming rise to £3,300 in October is due to soaring gas prices

Green levies will fall from current 5% to ~3%

2/

We may also hear talk of gas as a "transition fuel", so it's worth remembering that gas is the single-largest source of greenhouse gases in the UK

Moreover, it's only a "transition" or "bridge" away from coal – except we've already crossed that bridge

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon:

"For Scotland, the question the #ITVDebate posed is this - why should we be content for either of these men [Boris Johnson/Jeremy Corbyn] to run our country and shape our future? We can do so much better than that."
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon:

"All elections are important but this election really, really matters. At stake is not just the next five years.

The future of Scotland is on the line at this election."
Nicola Sturgeon: "I doubt there is anyone in Scotland who is not heartily sick of Brexit and the chaos we’ve seen played out at Westminster night after night.

But if Brexit goes ahead, all that will turn out to have just been the warm-up act."

Audience from #ITVDebate: 6.7 million. Yet received wisdom is it won’t have changed a thing. Hmm.
Anyone who has spent time talking to voters in #ge2019   knows how many are undecided and how many have the slipperiest of attachment to to their current voting intention. You don’t get get so many watching, in an election with fine margins and it not make any difference at all.

Not sure who won that really, if anyone. Suspect the audience would have been quite surprised though that Corbyn was wittier than Johnson, confounding what I suspect would have been their only expectation going in. #ITVDebate
Johnson probably annoyed audience with inartful repeated references to getting Brexit done. But it is, however repetitive, a clear message which resonates. Corbyn didn’t have equivalent, though won on zingers.
Both seemed disliked in equal measure if the audience is anything to go by, which more or less tallies with my travels on the road.

Funny how the one person who insists we can't get on and do the things we need to do until Brexit is completed can't actually talk about any policy other than Brexit, even when they are explicitly asked. #ITVDebate
Who is the leader you most admire?

The leaders of the EU 27 because of the Brexit deal they gave me.
What book would you give Jeremy Corbyn for Christmas?

A copy of my Brexit deal.

Britain Lacks Talent #ITVDebate
Who don't ITV just cut the mics when the speakers over-run?
Imagine if Newsnight had done the Prince Andrew interview using audience questions.

Broadcasters should trust their journalists to ask the best questions - otherwise why are they paying them?

Already it's clear what Boris Johnson wants to do. He thinks he can hurt Jeremy Corbyn on his Brexit stance. Will he back leave or remain?

Corbyn thinks he can land blows by accusing the PM of wanting to sell out the NHS to Donald Trump.

#ITVdebate
Corbyn is avoiding the question. Repeats simply that Labour will offer the choice to the British people.
Boris Johnson though did actually answer the NHS question. He says his government will never sell out the NHS. Laughter in the audience as Corbyn once again avoids the question on his Brexit stance. Not a good look...

1/ THREAD:

The #ITVDebate will be more important than any forerunner because mainstream media is paying more attention to social media than ever before. You'll have to play to social media strengths to win in the public eye. Here's how Corbyn can do that.
2/

Keep it brief - Johnson's rambling, elevated lexicon approach is fine for after-dinner speaking but cannot be easily cut for effective bite-sized video. Waffle is ineffective in the soundbite world.
3/ Why so glum, chum? Lighten up - One of many criticisms of Corbyn I have heard is his dour demeanour, unsmiling, hushed and monotone in interviews. Smile a bit more, gesticulate a bit more, be the Corbyn of the dispatch box, not the Marr show.
