Tea, blanket, and ready for the #INSAR2021 session on Global Insights on Understanding and Reducing Autism Stigma panel with @DrEilidh, @JacdenHouting, @DrMBotha, @DesiRJones & So Yoon Kim. I will do my best to live tweet this session!
(Pls excuse typos and/or lack of clarity, I will do my best!) #INSAR2021
We start with So Yoon Kim on Autism stigma in South Korea and the US.

Stigma negatively affects autistic people: effects include social exclusion, barriers to employment, and health.

Yep. And like other communities, we fight, disagree, and have divergent opinions, besides our divergent experiences. And that also means that you have to stop trying to find that one person or united voice to represent us, but listen to MANY of us, many orgs, and see the trends.
Marginalised subgroups include:

African autistic people IN AFRICA.

Do you even know the name of any Black African autistic activist who lives in the continent of Africa?

Hey, #INSAR2021 researchers, those who specialise in researching what helps nonspeaking autistic people with high support needs:

Who are your favourite nonspeaking autistic activists, and how have they informed your work?

Us: Listen to autistic people.

Them: No, you're adults. Our research is about children.

Us: We were once children, and we care about children.
Them: These children aren't like you. They can't go on the Internet and type.

Us: When we were children we didn't go on the Internet and type either.

Them: OK, but these children don't speak.

Us: We're not speaking now either, we're typing.
Them: These children don't EVER speak, and they hit their head against the wall.

Us: Yep, sounds like some of us.

Them: If you can type, you're too high-functioning to understand.

Us: Listen to yourself.

I don't want the research you people do saying "ABA works" implemented.

You set the goals, you create the hypothesis, you design the study, you interpret the results and you conclude that "ABA works".

My community won't help you implement your research.

#BoycottAutismResearch
Do you know what that phrase "evidence-based" has come to stand for among autistic people?

The ABSENCE of evidence of respect for human rights.

#BoycottAutismResearch
Renounce ABA, #INSAR2021. I dare you cowards.

Help us get nonconsensual ABA banned.

#ListenToNonspeakers. Stop silencing them. You're ACTIVELY doing right now.

If you don't start respecting #HumanRights in research, we will up the campaign to #BoycottAutismResearch.

Very proud of @kmdebrabander for her #INSAR2021 poster “Autistic Adults Accurately Detect Social Disinterest in their Conversation Partners when Non-Autistic Adults Do Not”. A🧵about our findings, which pretty clearly don’t align with a social cognitive deficit model of autism!
Data in this study are drawn from an earlier project by Kerrianne Morrison who found (among other things) that non-autistic adults-- but not autistic ones-- express low social interest for future interaction with autistic people they just met.
journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.117…
In the study detailed in Kilee's poster, we asked participants after their conversations to predict how their partner would evaluate their character traits and their interest in interacting with them again in the future.

Listening to Dr Petrus de Vries keynote #INSAR2021. So interesting to hear about his experiences of identifying priorities for future research, practice and shared accepted language involving stakeholders (academics, those affected by a condition, and those who support them) 1/5
Also how this involvement and consultation led to research which made a real difference to the lives of those with Tuberous Sclerosis - important lessons for autism research 2/5 #INSAR2021
I’d like to add this excellent paper by @SueReviews which gives guidance and examples of autism research partnerships: 3/5 #INSAR2021

Now: We are at the live #INSAR2021 press conference. And since it’s online, maybe you can be there, too:

facebook.com/autismINSAR/vi…
8 different studies are being presented at the #INSAR2021 press conference, draw from the 1000s of presentations being featured at the conference.

Unless I’m mistaken, there isn’t supplementary text or captioning so I’m having a hard time parsing what’s going on.
#INSAR2021 press conference topics include Diagnostic challenges in underserved populations. Also studies of pains and eating issues. Also a cross-cultural exploration of stigma between Korea and the US, and also the impact of COVID on autistic adults as well as their caregivers.
