For the first time since 1941, the Atlantic has had no named storm (e.g., tropical storm or #hurricane) activity from July 3rd-August 30th.
Since 1950, two Augusts have had no Atlantic named storm formations: 1961 and 1997. It remains to be seen if 2022 will join this list. 1961 ended up a hyperactive #hurricane season with an extremely busy September-November, while 1997 was a below-average season.
This remarkable quiet period is even more impressive given we have a robust #LaNina in the tropical Pacific and anomalously warm tropical Atlantic. Current 30-day-averaged tropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures are 6th warmest since 1982 and typical of a hyperactive season.

2- A recession is not good for Putin: It would reduce the demand for oil & natural gas & allow the EU to rebuild its inventories. It would also lower energy prices, which reduces Putin’s bargaining power. A recession would reduce the cost of building regasification terminals.
3- A recession might help Putin if it leads to increased public anger in Europe and change in governments. After all, Putin's objective is t break the EU and force some of them to deal with him covertly or overtly. Just look at the events in the Netherlands now.

Coastal #storms and #hurricanes can bring flooding (elevated water levels) and beach #erosion, but how much of each depends the coastal setting and the storm conditions. If we can understand and predict what hazards may threaten a coast, we can better prepare for them. 2/7
Coastal flooding and beach erosion hazards on sandy beaches should be considered separately. We're building off the existing Storm Impact Scale and proposing a new erosion hazard scale which is based on changes to the beach and dune profile. 3/7
#Floods and #wildfires are both subject to regression to the tail. The same holds for #droughts, #hurricanes, #landslides, #icemelt, #sealevelchange, and other phenomena closely related to the climate crisis.
This tells us that understanding regression to the tail and how to mitigate its specific manifestations for climate will be key to mitigating the climate crisis.
Here it is worth remembering that regression to the tail for the climate crisis will be just as indifferent to human ignorance and folly as regression to the tail is for covid-19.

Here’s one reality, we should be spending more money to stay on Earth than planning to leave to go to Mars because Earth’s Atmosphere is no longer viable to sustain life. Research is important but Mars Doesn’t Have an Atmosphere. Millions of people can’t live there in 125 years‼️
