I’ve been using @hypothes_is for collaborative annotation of both primary and secondary sources since 2018. It is the best digital pedagogical tool I have encountered. Some things I’ve learned:

Like all online learning platforms and tools, it works best with instructor presence. If you’re annotating with the students, there will be a richer conversation and you will get to hear from more folks.

2/
Pre-annotation is especially useful. Before posting a link to a piece for annotation, I add my own questions, comments, and reflections. I encourage students to reply to me (and each other) or add their own thoughts.

I just read an article in #HigherEd world that said it's not okay to misspeak in your instructional videos and probably thousands of people read this and I just want to say that's not actually true.

The mistakes are the best part.

One of my least favorite parts of #highered is this hatred of mistakes and being human.
If you restart recording every time you make a mistake you will spend all your waking hours recording videos because you are a human being and we make mistakes. And who does that serve? No one. That time can be put toward your own rest and play or student support.

1/ Learning to trust people with firsthand experience sounds pretty straightforward and logical, but time and again we see instances of leaders thinking they know better. Such were my thoughts as a young teacher advocating to the State legislature for my job and for my students.
2/ When I started teaching at Bear Lake high school in 2009, the state of Idaho had just made education budget cuts and were confronting additional cuts over several years to come due to the economic recession.
