In honor of #HMD2019, here's a (hopefully) brief thread on Carl Lutz.

For more information, start with the websites for the US Holocaust Museum and Yad Vashem.
Carl Lutz was born in 1895 in Switzerland. At the age of 18, and without knowing a word of English, he emigrated to the United States.

Soon, he enrolled at Central Wesleyan College in Warrenton, Missouri, hoping to go into ministry or missionary work. (Photo via USHMM)
In 1920, Lutz found a job with the Swiss Legation in DC and transferred to GW, where he finished his studies. From 1924-1935, Lutz worked several diplomatic posts in the US, one of which was in St. Louis. I took this photo about a year ago of the block where he used to work.

Many don't consider what happened to Holocaust survivors after camps were liberated, especially the thousands of orphaned children that had survived.

In 1945, 732 of them were brought to the UK to recuperate and begin a new life.

#HolocaustMemorialDay #HolocaustRemembranceDay
The 732 child survivors were brought to the UK by the Central British fund, now @WJRelief, who also organised the Kindertransport scheme.

The CBF lobbied the government, who agreed to grant the children two year visas provided not a cent was spent on them

#HolocaustMemorialDay
Money to care for the child survivors was raised privately, largely by the Jewish community.

The 732 children, of whom only 80 were girls, were sent to hostels around the UK. Their story is the forgotten final chapter of the Kindertransport scheme.

On the 74th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, #HMD2019 I want to thank someone who’s helped me so much in being able to understand and speak out against antisemitism, and he won’t even know it...
In September, I listened to a call from an Arab Muslim, @JassemTamim, in to @MaajidNawaz on LBC, and Jassem described the fear in the Jewish community he’d noticed on a couple of specific occasions, that he’d witness himself as a cabbie driving around London
Jassem talked about the online antisemitism course that he’d taken, that helped him understand the problem, and I decided to have a look.

It’s been the single most useful resource in working out what on Earth is going on and why.

Loads of short, easily digestable video clips.

#HolocaustMemorialDay THREAD:

It is eerie & immensely empowering to be in Vienna on #HMD2019, standing before this moving monument to Austrian Jews murdered in the #Holocaust.

Austria not only gave birth to Hitler, but is birthplace of modern Zionism, as envisaged by Herzl.

1/
74 years after the end of the #Holocaust, Hitler's dream to annihilate the Jewish people has been dashed, while Herzl's dream to establish a Jewish state has been fully realized.

THAT, that is the ultimate victory of the Jewish people! #HolocaustMemorialDay #HMD2019

2/
That not only did we survive, but that from the graveyards of Europe and the depths of despair, we went on to re-establish the Jewish state, in our ancestral homeland, Israel. #HolocaustMemorialDay

Tomorrow is Holocaust Memorial Day #HMD2019 Many of my relatives were murdered in the Holocaust solely for being Jews. Some also survived due to the extraordinary actions of people who showed the best of humanity 1/
The following pays testament to a few of those relatives who were victims of the Holocaust & also to my sister-in-law’s family, who were victims of the Cambodian genocide & 18 year old H’s family murdered in the Sudanese genocide #hmd 2/
My dad Len fled Nazi Germany alone aged 13 in 1936, when his father sent him to England. Arrested on his 16th birthday, the British interned him in Canada as an ‘enemy alien’. His school championed Len’s cause & he was sent back to the UK. He's now a lovely 95 yr old #HMD 3/

After I gave my speech on Tuesday for @HolocaustUK, Auschwitz survivor, Lily Ebert, came up to me shocked by what she’d heard, and immediately asked - what could she do to help? Lily is almost 90 years old, she’d given 3 talks that day, reliving her heartbreaking stories of what
