Thread #GunjanSaxena
My initial schooling, kindergarten to seventh standard (80s), happened at an Army Public School in Kashmir. In the last 2 decades as a journalist, I got many opportunities to watch India’s defence forces, closely. I also like watching war movies.
I watched #GunjanSaxenaTheKargilGirl on @netflix. Although all the actors have done a great job, the director/producer has subtly and sometimes even blatantly, converted it into a political project at many levels.
One, it portrays most Indian Air Force male officers of the 80s & 90s as obnoxious misogynists. Second, it shows most of #GunjanSaxena’s male colleagues in Indian Air Force as insensitive and ill-mannered douchebags.

#leadership #GunjanSaxenaTheKargilGirl I have been singularly blessed to have served in @IAF_MCC.My knowing Gunjan & serving in Kargil were reasons to watch it FDFS. Post-show, I felt disappointed, hurt& frustrated. The feelings were due to utmost respect for institutions of IAF.
For me, people will come and go but the Organisation is supreme. They have institutionalized the discrimination/humiliation & that needs to be called out.I call it out loud and clear " Dear Movie Makers of Gunjan Saxena: You got it all wrong. I invite you to read along the thread

Just wrapped up watching #GunjanSaxenaTheKargilGirl. Having been there, dun that
I must say, despite all the inaccuracies in the name of 'artistic liberties', for which the objectns of IAF is well justified, it was a movie whose time hd come.....
It certainly has given a platform for discussion and debate about mindsets regarding women not only in the military but every challenging and male dominated profession.
In my experience, I could categorise three kinds of mindsets -
1. Over protective - Those colleagues who treated us with kid gloves, appearing well meaning, yet not giving the opportunity to perform to the best of our ability. Most difficult to deal with!
2. The nasty browbeaters who were out right nasty but not the way shown. The decorum

Just finished watching #GunjanSaxenaTheKargilGirl. Superb movie. What I loved was the realistic way the movie was made. It shows the struggle of the first Indian Lady officer to see combat. The IAF was the first service to give chance to women in combat. Full credit to it. (More)
There were some in the force who doubted the capability of the lady officer. I don’t blame them. That is result of years of ingrained belief that defence is the domain for men. However, others in the IAF supported her, gave her wings to touch the sky with glory. (More)
The IAF came together as a unit to support her. What is lacking is the acting ability of Ms Kapoor. I am sure Flight Lieutenant Gunjan Saxena was much smarter in demeanour and confident than what Ms Kapoor projects. The IAF today has fantastic lady officers. (More)
