Guinea-Bisáu es una república semipresidencial. La Asamblea Nacional Popular consta de 102 escaños. 100 se eligen por representación proporcional por listas en veintinueve distritos plurinominales. Los 2 restantes son uninominales y representan a la diáspora en África y Europa.
Guinea-Bisáu fue una colonia de Portugal por varios siglos. En la década de los 60s, ante la negativa de la dictadura de Salazar de otorgar la independencia, Guinea-Bisáu se convirtió en escenario (junto con Angola y Mozambique) de la brutal guerra colonial portuguesa.

A number of opposition politicians and (pro-opposition?) civil society figures have made it very clear that they did not believe the official version of the story, some of them hinting that this was a ploy against the opposition PAIGC, which is to hold its Congress soon.
The coup attempt in #GuineaBissau yesterday came weeks after the military takeover in Burkina Faso and follows last year’s coups in Chad, Guinea, Sudan and Mali.

As most of these countries are situated in West Africa, it would be easy to think the drivers of these coups are the same across the board, but the reality is more complex:

Kenya did not appear at the oral proceedings before the ICJ after appearing at the preliminary objections phase (link to preliminary objections judgment below). However, the ICJ could rely on its written submissions, filed before deciding not to appear.

It makes for a sad read, I must say. And it echoes with what I have been hearing this last year. Now as before, some networks within the military and the military-controlled Guarda Nacional keep the Judiciary Police at bay and protect the trade.
Either these military leaders vouch for the traffickers, or the traffickers bring on board a number of civilian politicians and officials too. I did not know that the son of Interior Minister Botché Candé was the head of one Bissau's police corps...
