Image

Reading the alleged report by Vice-Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Mamadu Turé on the 1 Feb incidents at the Palacio do Governo in #GuineaBissau, available at the website ditadura e consenso (a usually good source for documents).
ditaduraeconsenso.blogspot.com/2022/02/tentat…
This is not an official source, however, so the authenticity of the report is not certain. Nor is it clear that the content of the report is accurate – as I mentioned before, accounts of many key events in Bissau are controversial, sometimes decades after the deed...
A number of opposition politicians and (pro-opposition?) civil society figures have made it very clear that they did not believe the official version of the story, some of them hinting that this was a ploy against the opposition PAIGC, which is to hold its Congress soon.

The coup attempt in #GuineaBissau yesterday came weeks after the military takeover in Burkina Faso and follows last year’s coups in Chad, Guinea, Sudan and Mali.

What drives these more frequent power grabs? The answer is:

it is complicated 🧵
bbc.com/news/world-afr…
As most of these countries are situated in West Africa, it would be easy to think the drivers of these coups are the same across the board, but the reality is more complex:
The January 2022 coup in #BurkinaFaso followed a growing insecurity in the country, a rise in #jihadist militancy and an increasingly frustrated army, especially after a deadly attack on 14 November 2021 left 53 soldiers dead, the highest death toll ever in one single attack.

Yesterday, @CIJ_ICJ handed down its judgment on the #maritimeboundary between #Somalia and #Kenya. This was the first judgment since the Court’s renewal in February 2021 and Judge Donoghue’s election as President (source of all images: @CIJ_ICJ). 👩🏻‍⚖️
Kenya did not appear at the oral proceedings before the ICJ after appearing at the preliminary objections phase (link to preliminary objections judgment below). However, the ICJ could rely on its written submissions, filed before deciding not to appear.

Somalia and Kenya had very different views on their maritime boundary. Somalia argued that there was no agreed boundary, so that the ICJ had to delimit a boundary by the 3-stage approach in use since the 2009 #BlackSea case (link below, [115]-[122]). 👩🏽‍💼

The final day of the anniversary of Black History. February is just the anniversary. Black History (World History) is 365 days/year. Many are historically illiterate - willingly or unwillingly. I’m grateful for my informal education in our history - at home as a child,
on my own study as a young adult and my formal historical education @ my #hbcu #scsu Department of Political Science & History. I do this. #blackhistory365 #blackhistory #africandiaspora #truth #amlicarcabral #guineabissau #heritage #balanta #akele #gabon🇬🇦

Pretty fascinating story... Traditional king in Mlomp (Ziguinchor region, southern Senegal) sets market prices for a number of goods, apparently for local produce. So curious to know more, #Casamance & #Senegal heads. xibaaru.sn/oussouye-le-ro…
I assume it is an attempt to protect local agriculturists from traders. The king acts as a de facto union organiser...
Fascinating that Diola kingships, often been disregarded, are gaining traction. In a way, the Diola have found their marabouts - decades ago, the Murid khalif general had intervened to get better prices for groundnut farmers, among whom he counted many follower

Finally getting down to reading one of the recent rare reports on #GuineaBissau - on its part in the global cocaine trade and that part's part in its politics. globalinitiative.net/analysis/cocai… (thanks to @FrancoisPatuel) (a Portuguese version is available too)
It makes for a sad read, I must say. And it echoes with what I have been hearing this last year. Now as before, some networks within the military and the military-controlled Guarda Nacional keep the Judiciary Police at bay and protect the trade.
Either these military leaders vouch for the traffickers, or the traffickers bring on board a number of civilian politicians and officials too. I did not know that the son of Interior Minister Botché Candé was the head of one Bissau's police corps...
