Important testimony coming up in Epic v. Apple Day 4, including our first Apple exec:

- Thomas Ko, Epic senior director
- Matthew Fischer, App Store VP
- Trystan Kosmynka, in charge of app review
- Steven Allison, Epic Game Store chief
- Matthew Weissinger, Epic VP of marketing
Thomas Ko, senior director at Epic, is now on the stand for direct examination from Epic laywer Brent Byars. Ko is head of head of online business strategy and operations and will be speaking to Fortnite distribution across platforms, among other things.
Ko says Epic’s payment system now supports 42 currencies and 100+ countries, with still “room to improve.”

Ko mentions Epic’s use of PayPal and other payment processors to process transactions on the Epic Game Store.

Key here is that Epic doesn’t require you use its system.

I wrote 30 Twitter threads in 30 days.

The goal?

Learn how to craft interesting threads, and grow a following. It (mostly) worked.

- New followers: +2.5K (+100% MoM)
- Top thread: 373K impressions
- Top tweet: 2.5K likes

Here's what I learned. Quick thread 👇👇
To start, here's the most popular thread I've written.

Thoughts on what made it work, below.

1. Quality

The threads that performed best were (usually) the ones I put the most effort into.

One example is this one about Jeff Bezos's origins. I spent hours researching and drafting it.

It's worth taking the time to craft your words.

Epic is holding an anti-Apple event called #FreeFortnite, and prizes include non-iOS devices

businessinsider.in/tech/news/epic… Image
➡️Epic Games is taking another jab at Apple with a dedicated in-game Fortnite tournament called #FreeFortnite, which will give away prizes such as non-iOS devices and anti-Apple merchandise.
➡️The tournament takes place on August 23, and prizes for players include an in-game skin of the "Tart Tycoon," an apple-shaped character who fairly obviously represents Apple CEO Tim Cook.

With Fortnite confronting Apple and Google, monopolies are front of mind. Today's thread tells the story of the industry's most famous anti-trust case:

The US v. Microsoft.

It's the tale of a "jihad" for the soul of tech. Image
Today, there's something delightfully affable about Bill Gates. The grandfatherly hair, stooped shoulders, a precise, nasal voice, waxing about some good he will do.

It was not always so. The Gates of the previous millennium was a ruthless, unsentimental competitor. Image
In the early '90s, a worthy competitor had emerged.

For all his vision, head perennially on a swivel, Gates was caught out by the Internet. When the Mosaic browser arose — the brainchild of Marc Andreessen among others — he paid little attention. ImageImage

At the most basic level, we’re fighting for the freedom of people who bought smartphones to install apps from sources of their choosing, the freedom for creators of apps to distribute them as they choose, and the freedom of both groups to do business directly.
The primary opposing argument is: "Smartphone markers can do whatever they want". This as an awful notion.

We all have rights, and we need to fight to defend our rights against whoever would deny them. Even if that means fighting a beloved company like Apple.
Another argument against supporting #FreeFortnite is "this is just a billion dollar company fighting a trillion dollar company about money". But the fight isn't over Epic wanting a special deal, it's about the basic freedoms of all consumers and developers.

#ICYMI: Epic Games filed a lawsuit against @Apple claiming that Apple is abusing its market position to extract money unfairly from apps (and by extension, from consumers)

They publicly announced their lawsuit yesterday with this video; a remake of Apple’s iconic “1984" ad.
(🧵)
The ad aired nationally once, during the 1984 Superbowl; announcing @Apple’s new Macintosh computer.

What was innovative about the ad was the portrayal that “big brother” controlled the representation of tech.

Some believe this was a message to @IBM.

Most memorable in that commercial was the woman hurling her hammer into the screen, symbolizing @Apple’s disruption of the “powers that be” in tech.

If we fast forward to today; Apple is now perceived as “big brother” and @FortniteGame is trolling them.

(sigo)

Whoa!! Fortnite vs. Apple playing out right now!
Epic Games (the parent company of Fortnite) added a direct-purchase option in the iOS version of Fortnite for players to purchase V-Bucks — Fortnite’s in-game currency. This bypasses Apple’s App Store rules (where Apple 1/5
2/5 takes 30% of the revenue) and so, Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store!

Epic's reaction?
1. This parody of Apple's iconic 1984 Super Bowl ad, called Nineteen Eighty-Fortnite!
3/5 How the ad looks as it was played inside Fortnite, at the big screen on the Party Royale island.

Fortnite VS El Mundo

#FreeFortnite ... oh, a) funny b) interesting spat c) hilarious because Epic is trying to mobilise users to complain about companies being locked into Apple but what about those exclusive deals on Epic's game store? Freedom is Exclusivity -
That said, as well as industrialisation of radicalisation online, then similar techniques with an intent to mobilise and radicalise groups against companies are starting to appear. In this post truth world where trust is being thrown away, I'm expecting this to get messy.
However, I'm sure for now that Epic games will mostly get away with its claims of "monpolistic tendencies" whilst creating its own "exclusive" arrangements on its own games platform. Hypocrisy much? Whatever happened to values in companies?

I'm seeing a lot of people say stuff like "Why should I cheer for Epic; they're already rich." Which, of course, is true, but I think misses one of the points of why they're doing this.

Namely, they're the only ones big enough to do this and actually make a difference.

THREAD
This is exactly like -- I'm not joking -- Taylor Swift taking on Spotify. Taylor didn't need the money, but she was a big enough voice that her making a statement brought the issue to the masses: time.com/3554468/why-ta…
Taylor/Epic don't *need* more money per transaction, but smaller artists certainly do. They can throw around their weight to make things better for other people.

Of course, they're going to make more money, too, but (maybe I'm just being naive) I also think they want to help.
