"While the #DeclarationOfIndependence may initially assert that 'All men are created equal,' thirty lines below that assertion, indigenous people are referred to as #mercilessIndianSavages.

"The Founding Fathers could use the seemingly inclusive term 'all men' because they had a worldview informed by the Doctrine of Discovery that gave them a very narrow definition of who was actually human.
2/
"The Declaration of Independence reflects the theological imagination of its time. The Doctrine of Discovery and the myth of Anglo-Saxon superiority girds the imagination that elevates the white body, mind, language and culture.

The #FourthofJuly is my favorite holiday. I almost always cry at some point on this day when I stop to think about the responsibility of being born into citizenship of the most amazing country of all time.
And I always ask God, 'what is your plan for the future of this country and can I be a part of it?' This year, more than ever, I have asked the Lord this question 😊
Take a moment & ask that question yourself! We are only ever one generation away from shrinking into the shadows of history – or from continuing to be a beacon of hope, freedom & truth. Thank you to the men & women who have given everything for this country. We are in your debt.

For those looking to photograph Fireworks tonight follow these easy steps and you should get pretty good results (the steps mentioned will apply to consumer grade to professional DSLR's and Mirrorless cameras with manual settings). #FourthofJuly
First you will need the following.

- A DSLR or Mirrorless Camera capable of manual controls.
- A Tripod
- A cable release, or a wireless cable release, or app control of the camera using your phone.
Next get into location and set up your camera on the tripod and frame your image. I would recommend getting to the location as early as possible to get the best spot to frame your photos, and so you have a little light left to compose your images.

Happy Fourth of July! I always say that I was born in Austria, made in America. This is the store in Graz where I found the magazine that became my blueprint for getting to America when I was just 15.
My dreams would have been impossible anywhere else, so today and every day, I’m grateful for the United States. And I will always fight for our country to be better every day, because being the greatest country in the world isn’t easy.
We have to work our asses off to keep improving. That’s patriotism. #FourthofJuly

A month after Kristallnacht, @davidjshipley’s father’s family left Berlin for the U.S.

As Jews, their time as Germans had to come to an end, to put it charitably. The family went first to NYC before settling in Oregon, a distant corner of a foreign land bloomberg.com/graphics/2021-…
Their relentless desire to become Americans, to join up with the country that had saved their lives, was brought home to @davidjshipley recently when he stumbled on Julian Shipley’s — his grandfather — study guide for his citizenship exam bloom.bg/2TDbG1o
@davidjshipley It wasn’t until the 1950s that the U.S. put in place a standardized citizenship exam.

Before then, applicants went before a judge, who quizzed them. Trick questions were forbidden, but everything else was fair game bloom.bg/2TDbG1o

ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE - As expensive as it is, we have an urgent care down the street.

In Africa, less than 50% of the population has access to any medical care.

One doctor dying means 10,000 more people lose medical help.

Short thread, as we approach July 4th about the Johnson–Jeffries race riots in America and the suffering of the Jews in Europe, as detailed by the great Jewish & Zionist leader, Vladimir Ze’ev Jabotinsky, in his essay "Homo Homini Lupus,” or “Man is As a Wolf to Other Men." Johnson standing over Jeffr...
On July 4th a boxing match took place between Jack Johnson & Jack Jeffries. Johnson was the reigning heavyweight champ, and only the second African-American to hold that title.

Jeffries, who was white, had been heavyweight champ but refused to fight Johnson & retired
Jeffries announced he would “reclaim the heavyweight championship for the white race.” He became the “Great White Hope" in "the fight of the century.”

The @nytimes warned, “If the black man wins, thousands of his ignorant brothers will misinterpret his victory.”

Johnson won.

Wishing all a safe #FourthofJuly! In addition to our Red, White & Blue Pinterest board s.si.edu/38sAYST, we’re sharing excerpts from Frederick Douglass’ 1852 speech: "The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro." (1/8)
Douglass, a former enslaved man, was well known as an abolitionist, author, orator, and statesman and served as an advisor to five U.S. presidents, including Lincoln during the Civil War. He has appeared on two U.S. postage stamps, issued in 1967 and 1965. ©USPS (2/8)
Douglass presents a layered portrait of America that resonates deeply on this day. “Fellow Citizens, I am not wanting in respect for the fathers of this republic. They were statesmen, patriots and heroes, and for the good they did, and the principles they contended for… (3/8)

My mother-in-law announced that this year for the #FourthofJuly the family is cancelling the Fourth of July...

and Thanksgiving...

forever.

A thread of love and respect to my momma.
Now mind you, this woman is the quintessential Black matriarch who loves her family and family gatherings more than anything. She starts planning next year’s Thanksgiving at this year’s Thanksgiving (what family color to wear, the decorations, the theme, etc). Serious thought.
A change like this is huge for her. I watched her struggle with it for years. It involves admitting that all the glorious days she planned so lovingly in the past were part of building an American mythology that masked settler colonialism and slave racial capitalism.

Happy #FourthOfJuly! Independence Day is a reminder that when we come together in common purpose, our great Nation can conquer any and all obstacles. Image
Today as we celebrate, we should also reflect, and acknowledge that our Nation’s independence did not include freedom for all peoples. We must recognize the work we have ahead to make our country a more just and perfect union for everyone. We can, and must, do better.
As you enjoy this weekend celebrating and reflecting on the birth of our country, please remember to do your part to stop the spread of COVID-19. Wear a mask. Wash your hands. Socially distance whenever you can. This disease does not take a holiday.

Okay, so you've watched the #HamiltonFilm, and want to celebrate #FourthofJuly by digging deeper into America's founding. Here are some recommendations for books that not only cover key themes and topics from the play, but are also very engaging and approachable. /1
First, there's an excellent collection of essays by historians on the play itself, including its many meanings and misreadings, edited by @TenuredRadical. I especially like @jlpasley's essay on the modern uses of federalists like Hamilton. /2 rutgersuniversitypress.org/historians_on_…
For the American Revolution in general, there are legions of books that provide solid overviews. My favorite is Alan Taylor's, which balances military, indigenous, political, and social sides of the era. It is a comprehensive continental history. /3 wwnorton.com/books/American…

Perhaps the greatest anti-slavery speech ever uttered is “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July,” by Frederick Douglass, in 1852. I wanted to make the speech more accessible. Here’s a thread with an abridged version of the speech we should reread every #FourthofJuly. 1/
The papers and placards say, that I am to deliver a 4th of July oration. It is the birthday of your National Independence, and of your political freedom. 2/
"I shall not presume to dwell at length on the associations that cluster about this day. Oppression makes a wise man mad. Your fathers were wise men, and if they did not go mad, they became restive under this treatment." 3/

If you're looking for a reminder of who America is this #FourthofJuly, I highly recommend @PadmaLakshmi's show Taste the Nation. The thoughtful, loving profiles of 10 communities, from the Gullah Geechee to Native Americans to Mexicans, reflect our true strength--our diversity.
Not only does it cover the history of #immigration, both by choice and against one's will, it explores #ClimateChange, the challenges of being bi/multiracial, manifestations of racism, and more, all through the lens of food.
And of course, the food looks amazing. (Side note: someone should make a compilation of Padma's "oh my god" reaction shots.) The episode on the struggles of Thai women of Las Vegas had me crying and drooling at the same time.

“On this Fourth of July, the rest of us—and our wealthy white male allies—should be celebrating our ongoing struggles for freedom and not celebrating as if we are free. We should be celebrating our disobedience. . .and discontent about inequities and injustices in all forms.” 3/4
