The @CityofWheeling City Council and Public Works Committee met today, June 6. Several proclamations were made, ordinances approved, and over 35 new ordinances proposed.

Here are some of the stories from tonight. #folkreporter @FolkReporters

Public Works Comm updated the people about ongoing, multi-million $ projects. Street paving is 77% done, will wrap up in next 3 weeks. Some residents, like Ms Cadar, have complained about flooding potential in newly paved alleys. #folkreporter

Some $20mil in sewer projects are ongoing or out to bid for WPCD.

The Streetscape project is still set for Nov ‘24 completion. Paving on Main St will commence ahead of schedule when contractor begins east sidewalk construction. #folkreporter

I’m at the Moundsville City Council meeting, it starts at 6:30. It’s crowded today, not sure why. #folkreporter @FolkReporters 1/
Started with a moment of silence for two officers that recently passed, then prayer or “evocation”, then pledge. Minutes approved. 2/
Public comment:
Rep from American Legion requests that a day (didn’t catch it) be designated poppy day in Moundsville
New speaker- complaining about a “trashed” property next to them. Talking about language they hear, and that it devalues their property. 3/

The May 16 @CityofWheeling #CityCouncil meeting was unlike any other, due in large part to it's high attendance. Many came out in support of the LGBTQ+ and the upcoming Pride on the Plaza event. More than 60 people filled the chambers. Here's what you missed:

1/ The City Council Chambers o...
Former state Sen Owens Brown was present, as well as current Delegate @WVUFLU. Del Fluharty, on entering the room, said "I heard something big was happening. Did I miss anything?" Something big indeed happened--an outpouring of support for #LGBTQ+ people #folkreporters

2/
The Friendlier City Project, a Wheeling non-profit with the mission to build and foster a thriving #LGBTQ+ community, asked supporters to come out in support of the June 10 Pride on the Plaza event. This was to rebuke a woman who speaks against LGBTQ+ people often.

I’m at the Moundsville City Council meeting. It starts at 6. I’ll be live tweeting. 1/ @FolkReporters #folkreporter Image
This is my first time here. Different vibe than county commission. Every member of the council has a laptop and microphone. In addition to mics, no fan in the background. I might actually get to hear them. 2/
Only about 5 people in attendance (including me). Unclear if any have been invited to talk to the council about something. It feels more lively welcoming than county commission. 3/

Guess who has two thumbs, a Twitter and a free morning. Me! I’m at the Marshall County Commission regular session that starts at 9. It was my plan to live tweet it, but no cell phone use in the chambers. I didn’t bring a notebook, so I’ll update from memory after it’s over.
Okay, meeting over. It lasted about 25 minutes. Seating is limited (about 12 audience seats). In the audience there was 6 people (including me). It’s hard to hear at the back of the room (loud air unit), and commissioners made no effort to speak up, 2/

Going to attempt to live tweet the @MorgantownGov City Council meeting (my first attempt at being a #folkreporter)

Lots of money stuff on tonight, including growing the surveillance state, the ‘23-‘24 budget, and more. 🪡

Here’s the agenda: morgantownwv.gov/AgendaCenter/V…
Not related to policy, but the Patrick Henry statue in the stairwell at the county courthouse is terrifying.
First up is neighbor Vaike Haas talking about Suncrest Safe Routes, a pilot project (grant funded) to keep intersections in Suncrest safe. The idea (I think) is that people change behaviors at crosswalks - so her project is to simulate crosswalks where they don’t exist.

The @CityofWheeling #CityCouncil held its second and final meeting today, February 21, 2023! I report as a #folkreporter independently for the Hudson Household Editorial. This thread was made using @FolkReporters | @BlackByGodWV thread guide!

First thing to note: admittance to the City-County building often involves removing your belongings to be scanned, and walking through a medal detector. I was informed by an officer “no one is at post,” and this safety check was not conducted.

2/13
In attendance were Mayor Elliot @MayorWheeling, Rep Thalman @ViceMayorWhg, Rep @RosemaryKetchum, Rep Sklavounakis, and Rep Palmer. Rep @benseidler and Rep @t_thorngate were absent.

So I spoke with the Health Care Authority of West Virginia who approves certificates of need in our state. A 🧵 by #folkreporter @folkreporters 1/
I spoke with Timothy Adkins, the interim director of the Certificate of Need program. He clarified the CON program for me, as it pertains to #obgyntwitter in West Virginia. 2/
If an ambulatory care center aka hospital or hospital affiliated clinic exists in your community, that entity DOES NOT need to apply for a CON to add #obgyntwitter care to it's existing facility. 3/

The overwhelming testimony regarding #hb2007 in #WestVirginia that this bill will result in the death of #transyouth. Clergy included. The line is out the door. Parents of trans kids are scared. Here's a thread on my thoughts and key take aways.
#folkreporter | @FolkReporters 1/
Rorhbach (Cabell - 26) continues to text in the background while people pour their hearts out. Suicide rates amongst trans kids are high. For trans youth it's transition or die. 2/
More testimony being given regarding letting qualified medical professionals help make these decisions not legislature. 3/

A guide to being a #folkreporter with @BlackByGodWV - a 🧵:
Good ole fashion #folkreporting is done by YOU the citizen. Witnessing is one of the most important things we as citizens can do to keep our elected officials and community accountable. 1/
When forming a thread on what you are witnessing, it is important to tag the elected officials you are covering when ever that is an option. Including relevant hashtags is also important. If you are at a #countycommission meeting let folx know! Tag your municipalities as well. 2/
Let people know you are a folk reporter! Include the following at the begining of your thread:

I’ll be listing in on, and tweeting about today’s session of WV Senate Judiciary. On the agenda (attached) is a bill dealing with DNA maintained for law enforcement and a bill dealing with selecting delegates for an Article V convention. #Folkreporter @BlackByGodWV Image
The two bills: DNA bill (S.B. 53)
If I understand correctly, the bill would require people being arrested provide a DNA sample upon arrest for certain crimes, as opposed to after conviction.

wvlegislature.gov/Bill_Text_HTML…
@lauraforwv proposed an amendment to S.B. 53 to prevent DNA samples to be added into any database until after a criminal conviction, meaning DNA would be collected on arrest, but not added to databases until there is a conviction.
