Sochy byly v Richmondu instalovány až na začátku 20.století během období, které američtí historici nazývají nejtemnější kapitolou rasových vztahů v USA. Je to období velkého počtu lynčování, přijetí ústav a zákonů segregujících obyvatelstvo. Sochy měly odstrašit Afroameričany.
Nejvýznamnějším a nejnavštěvovanějším pomníkem Konfederaci je Stone Mountain v Georgii. Stát skálu zakoupil v roce 1958 pro účely pomníku a v roce 1965, na stoleté výročí vraždy Abrahama Lincolna, pomník zpřístupnil veřejnosti.
