There are many liberals who were first shocked about the encounter killing of #AsadAhmed and then horrified by the killings of #AtiqAhmed and #AshrafAhmed in custody. I count myself as a liberal, too, but I find these criticisms bereft of logic.

A 🧵 to explain why.

We would all like our justice system to operate with full due process. But that it doesn't is shown best by the fact that the term "encounter killing" is unique to India. You don't hear this term in Western countries. Outside India, these are known as #extrajudicialkillings (2/n)
Liberal commentators have denounced the killings of these three gangsters without due process as the complete failure of the law and order system. They are right. But this failure is not new. The first encounter killing in Mumbai happened in 1982 in Wadala.

In the latest @UNHumanRights letter to #India, 9 UN Special Rapporteurs have raised concern over the widespread human rights violations in #Kashmir, especially #enforceddisappearances #extrajudicialkillings and #torture. Excerpts from the letter are below:
UN SR's have raised concern over sudden closure of the SHRC in Oct 2019 which has left the people of the region with limited legal recourse to seek justice for potential human-rights violations committed against them including enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings etc.
UN Special Rapporteur's have said that the closure of SHRC has created uncertainty as to how the pending cases will be treated.

Exactly four years ago today, I photographed this image that would later be called “pieta.”

On July 23, 2016, under a footbridge along Edsa Pasay Rotonda, Jennilyn Olayres cradled her partner Michael Siaron after being shot to death by motorcycle-riding gunmen.
It was a traumatic night for many reasons. Traumatic to me because to this day, the voice of Olayres still lingers in my mind.
As she held her lifeless partner in the middle of a crime scene, surrounded by bystanders, police, and the press, she screamed at us photographers, begging to stop taking photos and help her instead.

We need a movement to change Kenya. Not a party, not an institution, but a movement of people choosing to do life differently from what the state, the church and the media demand and manipulate us to do.

Because autocracy has now captured our institutions.
Kenya is an autocratic state. Idi Amin of the 70s is Muigai of the 21st century.

The only difference is that Muigai doesn't always need the cops to destroy us. He just keeps pushing our buttons, that we destroy ourselves on his behalf.
Muigai has penetrated our minds and souls with a junk curriculum, a tyrannical business sector, #hudumanamba and #BBIreport, so that we do the work for him of destroying ourselves so that there is nobody or nobody strong enough to resist him. #BBINonsense
