I feel a big factor here is that #COVID19 & all the associated problems it caused for lab scientists has laid bare the precarious nature & short-termism of being a #PostDoc to #PhD students coming through the system & many have just decided "this is not for me"

Research has been put on hold following the closure of libraries, archives and museums; fellowships have been postponed or, in some cases, cancelled; publications delayed; and, in many cases, our projects have been reframed and remoulded as a result of the pandemic.

i got about 50:50 praise and hate for this. weirdly enough, the praise and hate were often about the same thing: the (early) stage of my career.
praise: "it's great you're so keen and have grasped key issues and taken action so early..." 2/8

Equality, diversity &inclusion is only 1 of the topics that will be addressed, & I personally am disappointed that such an important issue only merits part of a short one hour session. Nonetheless, I hope some key questions around leadership, accountability & scrutiny get raised.

When I first joined the #APSPPB, I was very overwhelmed by being on a Zoom call (lol) with a bunch of professors and ārealā plant pathologists. It took me a while to find my sea legs as they say. (2/n)

Today is the 6th anniversary of my #PhD viva. I note it in some way every year. This year is a little different. Over recent months I've been facing up to the fact that I may not be able to stay in academia for the 7th anniversary. This is a thread on why.
Before starting on this though, a few thoughts first. As a white middle-class man I have never had to deal with any number of issues or obstacles that many of my friends, colleagues, or peers have. I can only imagine how hard it must be to deal with systemic obstructions too /2
Probably the last thing academia needs is another person who looks like me. That doesn't mean I want to leave, but we need to acknowledge the heavily uneven playing field that is in effect. If departments are already populated with people who look like me; it's time to ask why /3

First up, Huber et al . report how they tried to replicate a study published in @NatureNeuro. After being invited beforehand to run & submit the study by one editor, a different editor then desk rejected them once the (non-replication) results were in. /2
