2-A patients need for opiate pain meds should not be determined on addiction treatment issues. Nor should it necessitate recreational drug advocacy. Those are NOT our fights.

3-And here we are. Tens of millions of people in pain told that we should be helping get access to #MAT for thoes w/addiction issues, and help legalize recreational drugs, all while we watch our frends in the pain community dying due to lack of needed legal/safe MEDICINES.

1-Some things are clear after watching the show today.
1/Drug use does not = addiction.
2/Ppl choose to use drugs; recreationally or in addictive process. There is no blame w/accidental ODs except the unknown aspect of the drug being used.

3/People are suffering in the addiction community, and now too in the pain community, as the national discussion around 'opioids' has been largely based on high emotion vs rational discourse and sadly mainly due to profit driven agendas & policies.

4/As a parent of an adult child battling addiction, I've been unable to be there for her, because as I as a person with a severe C-spine injury and chronic illness I am denied the pain MEDICINES that allowed me to function.

I read @drcarlhart #DrugUseForGrownUps this weekend. I am even more inspired by his work & courage. I so appreciated his reflections on his own academic journey, importance of cognitive flexibility, and evidenced reminder that most ppl who use drugs do not develop addiction. 1/
He shines a light on how deeply broken our approach to drug use is. Racism drives drug policy and the drug war and its many foot soldiers have created a giant smokescreen which allows for massive funding for surveillance, imprisonment, and even murder of Black and brown bodies 2/
The book is decidedly not about addiction, and that’s sort of the point. Sizeable minority of ppl do develop addiction. We need effective, human-centered treatment & harm reduction to save lives, like welcoming care, MOUD, drug checking, overdose prevention sites, safe supply 3/
