1/ For the next 7 weeks, our #MedEdTwagTeam #TweetorialTuesday will review the foundational #ClinicalTeaching skills.

Then we will launch into our new threads on more advanced clinical teaching skills.

2/ Why are we doing this?

July is a time of transitions.

And we believe these foundational skills are the most important ones to master before moving to more advanced skills.

Revisit this intro thread from @GStetsonMD for details about what's to come:

3/ Plus, using spaced learning to revisit content is an effective way to learn & retain information!

1/ Supervisor's šŸ’
Why isnā€™t the heparin drip ordered yet? Iā€™ll just order it...

Trainee's šŸ’
Why am I even here? My supervisor repeats everything I do. Do they even trust me?

How can we balance supervision w/ autonomy?

This weekā€™s #MedEdTwagTeam topic: Trust & Empower

2/ This weekā€™s discussion is our final @MedEdTwagTeam thread on foundational #ClinicalTeaching skills.

We discuss entrustment & empowerment, which are key to promoting *appropriate* autonomy.

3/ So what are entrustment & empowerment, and why do they matter in #MedEd?

The article below in @AcadMedJournal provides a helpful definition of entrustment:

When supervisors entrust trainees,
it empowers trainees.

It provides them with autonomy. Image

Have you ever a junior member of your team ask you a question, and you had NO IDEA what the answer was?

Like, literally no clue.
Racking your brain.
Nothing.

Nope, just me?

This weekā€™s #MedEdTwagTeam #ClinicalTeaching topic: Humility.

On my first day as a senior resident, I was terrified that my interns would ask me a question that I didnā€™t know.
ā€¦And they did.

So I said, ā€œI donā€™t know, letā€™s look it up.ā€

And, (not surprisingly) they appreciated that.
Me, admitting my limitations & offering to help.
3/ Honestly, this fear of not knowing things still plagues me.
I have a weird combination of confidence + imposter syndrome.

Some days I feel confident.
Other days I wonder why everyone else is so much smarter than me.

Why can't I remember the names of those famous trials?!

1/ šŸ’Thoughts of a traineešŸ’

ā€œShould I call my [resident/fellow/attending]?ā€
ā€œI donā€™t want to be a bother.ā€
ā€œI donā€™t want them to think Iā€™m dumb.ā€

Sound familiar?
I know these thoughts plagued me.

How can we prevent this?

This weekā€™s #ClinicalTeaching topic: Be Available
2/ To me, ā€œBeing Availableā€ means ensuring that my team feels that I am their safety net

Nothing is beneath me.
Iā€™m here to help.

WE, as a team, are responsible for our patients.

A failure of one, is a failure of all.
Yet, an accomplishment of one should be celebrated by all.
3/

In my mind, the concept of ā€œBeing Availableā€ has two components:

1āƒ£Approachability (i.e. are people comfortable asking for help?)

2āƒ£Proximity (i.e. are you physically & mentally ā€œthereā€ for your team?)
