50 days before #COP26 #ClimateAssemblyUK members are coming to Parliament today to mark the 1st anniversary of their report

The Govt has also published its response to the @CommonsBEIS inquiry on Climate Assembly UK's findings

Lots to say THREAD
First up, if you didn't see this y'day, four of the assembly members (Sue, Marc, Sharon and Tracey) met Sir David Attenborough

Great clip here: channel4.com/news/sir-david…
Sir David said: "the Assembly has been abundantly clear that greater public participation & fairness is needed at the heart of all climate action & ...I hope this govt has heard [that] loud and clear... [that's] one [message] I plan to share with all world leaders at COP26...”

This "what do you drive?" question is a valid one. If people are expected to change their lives in significant ways, it's important that political leaders set an example and signal their commitment. It's worth discussing properly tho, rather than a 'gotcha' format

For those already heavily committed to climate action and desperate for #COP26 to be a success, this might seem like a delayer's question, individualising climate change. But if setting an example at the national level is important, it is important at an individual level too.

Sharma's answer was reasonable and probably reflects where many people are at. It's sensible not to immediately junk a diesel car that you don't use very much. But questions like this should be asked and answered - because they are fundamental to climate justice.

The Green Alliance believes that the #ClimateAssemblyUK -- 100 people -- is a "public mandate".

The Green Alliance is an organisation which has been working in Parliament since the 1970s to produce a cross-party consensus on environment, AGAINST the public's interests.
I.e. by producing a cross-party consensus on climate change, the Green Alliance believed it could get MPs to vote for the draconian policies it lobbied for, on behalf of its billionaire and corporate backers, no matter what the public felt about climate change.
But this create a democratic deficit.

MPs were all on board the consensus. But they knew that their constituents wouldn't tolerate it.

But now there was a consensus, there was no possibility of debates, or contesting the principles of the agenda.

2/ The assembly was established by six select committees to inform their work on how the UK can meet its target of net zero by 2050.

It is designed to strengthen and support decision making in parliament by providing a valuable body of evidence about the views of the public.
3/ The 108 assembly members who committed nearly 60 hours to the process, came from “all walks of life and across the UK”. The youngest was 16 and the oldest 79, including people who work for the NHS, business owners, full time carers and many others.

Still in Birmingham after @NetZeroUK #ClimateAssemblyUK thanks to #StormCiara but I'm relaxed!

Again, *such* an experience.

And some reflections from me - thread...

First: AMAZING job by @involveUK and team, both logistics and facilitation.

This weekend I worked on the 'In The Home' strand, with the brilliant @kaela leading relaxed and inclusive debate.

Even when the storm wreaked travel havoc, the team sorted it, & were still smiling.
This weekend we were mainly working in smaller groups. My group looked at how to get to zero carbon in the home - helped by a brilliant speaker line-up (more on that below).

I liked the groups - less formal, and chance for detailed discussion between participants & speakers.
