Maybe it's just me, but it seems like #ExposeChristianSchools is getting more & higher-profile pushback than things like #EmptyThePews or #ChristianAltFacts -- and I wanted to explore some reasons that might be.
I grew up in evangelical-land during the 70s and 80s, and left the church in the 90s, so my experiences were before a lot of the other people who share their #Exvangelical stories on here.
I ~saw~ these changes happening in the church -- the move toward right wing politics, Christian patriarchy, anti-demonic paranoia, etc. -- but I saw a lot of them in their early, nascent forms
This week, I gave my grandfather's Bible to my son. (A thread.)
I loved Grandpa. We became close when I was a teen, after I got past my horror from him suggesting I have my hand amputated when I was 7. My parents weren't 'godly' enough to do it.

(2) I had grabbed my brother in self-defence, and my hand hit his crotch. Grandpa leaned over and said "If your parents really followed God, they'd cut your hand off for touching a man there. It's in the Bible."
(3) When I was 16, he and I had a Come to Jesus moment. I told him off - politely but firmly - for something he'd done. He shocked me by apologizing; I'm pretty sure I'm the first person in the family to get an actual apology from him.
I was home schooled with #AcceleratedChristianEducation as well- and it is hard to know where to begin. The years of isolation? The flat-out lies? The misogyny and gender roles and loch ness monster cited as proof evolution is a myth? #ChristianAltFacts
How about this fact about my homeschool- my "diploma" is absolutely meaningless.

I try to stay positive, and look to the future and what I can do- but seriously, having been taught a bunch of lies as #homeschool that lead to a useless diploma has been a huge (avoidable) problem.

I'm gonna do a quick thread here about #Exvangelical and #ChristianAltFacts when it comes to male sexuality. Some folks assume that the fundamentalist patriarchy was all fun and games for people with male bodies. This is not the case. Buckle up, kids.
1.) We were constantly pounded (ha!) with the idea that lust is "every man's battle". It is a battle that is almost impossible to win ("If you have unrestricted internet, you're guaranteed to look at porn!"), but if you loved Jesus you would try anyways.
2.) Here's the catch: All sexual desire was labeled as lust. You think a girl is cute? Lust. Intrigued by the pictures on magazine covers? Lust. You imagine having sex with a hypothetical future wife? Lust. God forbid you touch your own penis! Lust, lust, dirty sinful lust!
