Day 462 of #Europe's war, the last day of May.

Mercifully a quiet morning so far this Wednesday in #Ukraine

This is my 462nd daily thread.
All the info you need about #Russia's attack in one handy thread, updated throughout the day.

You can support me with a coffee (see bio)🙏
If you happen to have missed all yesterday's news, put the kettle on and prepare for a long read!

Here's the link for yesterday's thread on what happened in #Ukraine and #Russia.
#SlavaUkraini

The biggest event overnight happened in #Russia's #Krasnodar region.

Drones hit the Afipsky Oil Refinery and a fire soon took hold, although it's since been extinguished; no-one was hurt.

About 150km from the front, that's less fuel helping Russia kill Ukrainians.

It's been 37 years since the #Chornobyl nuclear power plant suffered the biggest man-made disaster in history. And today, Russia has once again put humanity at risk of a nuclear catastrophe 🧵 Image
Chornobyl disaster became an important factor in the collapse of the USSR. As a result of the accident and government lies, trust in the Soviet regime finally collapsed. The current foreign policy pursuits of the Kremlin have the objective of reviving the USSR in some capacity.
On February 24, 2022, Russian troops invaded the Kyiv region and seized the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. It was the first time since 1986 that gamma radiation in Chornobyl has increased 20-fold. Russians disregarded radiation safety rules and provoked a number of fires.

Welcome along to my daily thread with everything you need to know about #Russia's illegal invasion of #Ukraine.

Wednesday is Day 427.
If you missed y'day's news, no fear, the link is here!

And what a day with loads of stories, particularly #RussiaOnFire

26 April is also the anniversary of the #Chornobyl #Chernobyl disaster in #Ukraine.

The repressive Soviet occupiers of the time refused to admit a problem and even forced kids in #Kyiv on to the streets a few days later for the MayDay parade.

Very little to report today on #Russia's losses of the last 24 hours (as estimated by #Ukraine)

Broadly in line with recent days.

EVOLUTION OF DIPLOMACY. "Nothing about 🇺🇦without 🇺🇦" is extremely important for the Ukrainian nation. But it also serves the interests of other nations because it doesn't allow 🇷🇺to turn its aggression against Ukraine into a broader confrontation with 🇺🇸.
It's a failed attempt of #Moscow to impose the great power competition scheme and trade its "cooperation" on global issues for allowing it to re-establish spheres of influence in Europe that justified the "suspension" of their participation in the new #START Treaty.
There are no immediate negative consequences of such a decision, and, highly likely, there won't be any in the future, for a new nuclear arms race for Moscow would mean old results – a state collapse.

Vadym is one of those who was trained in 🇩🇪 and now destroys 🇷🇺 missiles and drones with the help of the modern #IrisT system.

The 🇩🇪 system is really modern, powerful and effective. Already during the first baptism of fire in October last year, the system shot down 100 percent ✅ of the targets, these are mostly cruise missiles, - says the anti-aircraft gunner.

2/
Our "#BukM1" destroyed 10 🇷🇺 targets - #Mi24 helicopters, #Su30, #Su35 aircraft. At first we were stationed in the #Chornobyl area, then we moved to another one. When they offered to go to study in 🇩🇪 and learn new technology, Vadym agreed without thinking.

The start of the daily thread with all the news and analysis that matters

Coming up, more big losses for Russia as many see the counter-attack in the South as being underway...

Despite a slight problem yesterday evening with Twitter being unavailable via web, there was still a lot of news covered. In case you missed anything, here's the link to yesterday's thread:

Let's start with the remarkable numbers this morning just released by #Ukraine.

It's estimated 450 more Russian soldiers have died in the invasion, while APVs destroyed also well above the daily mean.

Already on February 24 - the day of the 🇷🇺 invasion of 🇺🇦 - the "liberators" appeared at the #Chornobyl nuclear power plant, who were there until March 31.
All this time, they held hostage the staff of the plant, as well as the National Guard soldiers who guarded it.
(1/4)
The power plant did not receive the external power required for safe storage of spent fuel. Forest fires also broke out in the Exclusion Zone, and the occupiers did not allow them to be extinguished.

Before leaving the #Chornobyl nuclear power plant, the occupiers drew up and signed the "ChNPP Acceptance and Transfer Act". It stated that the troops of the 🇷🇺 National Guard allegedly "guarded" the #Chornobyl nuclear power plant from February 24 to March 31. "

Welcome to the weekend and to Day 38 of the Kremlin war on #Ukraine.

I am still gathering news and data on the Russian attacks on #Ukraine during the night.

#Kharkiv again looks to be worst hit, with endless explosions heard. Some fires burn - this one video submitted. Remember exact locations cannot be revealed, hence the blurring

Although Ukraine denied the attacks, UK wouldn't highlight this unless it believed they did it, so I bow to the military intel.

Earlier in the evening #Dnipro recorded one missile strike. The local administration refused to give further details.

However I've learned emergency services have now confirmed it was another hit on an oil depot, this time in Novomoskovs'ky.

No one was killed.

#Ukraine nuclear regulator told IAEA today it had lost all communication w/ #Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, can no longer provide updated info. @rafaelmgrossi says IAEA's aware of reports that power has now been restored to the site, need for confirmation. bit.ly/3vT0I8Z Image
#Ukraine’s nuclear regulator had told IAEA diesel generators were powering systems important for safety at #Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Operator not able to maintain some functions such as radiation monitoring, ventilation systems and normal lighting.
If emergency power were lost, it would still be possible for #Chornobyl staff to monitor the water level and temperature of the spent fuel pool. They would do this under worsening radiation safety conditions and would not be able to follow operational radiation safety procedures.

IAEA and #Ukraine nuclear regulator agree that loss of power at #Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant would not have a critical impact on essential safety functions at the site. bit.ly/35IdnAR
Lack of off-site power at #Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant “likely to lead to a further deterioration of operational radiation safety at the site and create additional stress for around 210 technical experts and guards,” @rafaelmgrossi said.
#Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant now has 2 of 4 power lines + a backup available to the plant. "This is another example of where the safety pillar to secure off-site power supply from the grid for all nuclear sites has been compromised,” @rafaelmgrossi said.

While there is no near-term risk to public health, these latest developments are another example of Russia’s extraordinarily reckless and dangerous actions. 3/

Update on Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant:

750 kV ChNPP - Kyiv high-voltage line is currently disconnected due to the damage caused by the occupiers.

As a result, the Chernobyl station and all nuclear facilities in the Exclusion Zone are without electricity.
About 20,000 spent fuel assemblies are stored in the spent nuclear fuel storage facility-1. They need constant cooling. Which is possible only if there is electricity. If it is not there, the pumps will not cool. As a result, the temperature in the holding pools will increase.
After that evaporation will occur, that will lead to nuclear discharge.

The wind can transfer the radioactive cloud to other regions of Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and Europe.

In addition, there is no ventilation inside the facility.
