That Time Natives Gave @MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred An Award: A Thread

Last week MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred decided that racial justice for Natives is over by announcing he was cool with the @braves racist name, chop, and chant.

#TheTimelsNow #NotYourMascot #ChangeTheName
Apparently Rob Manfred solved racism against Natives when he got Cleveland to stop wearing chief wahoo on the field in 2018.

#TheTimelsNow #NotYourMascot #ChangeTheName
Rob Manfred knows he's the best ever at solving all of the Native baseball racism because he has one Native friend, the National Congress of American Indians @NCAI1944, who gave him an award for it in 2019.

ATLANTA FANS ARE NOT RACIST: A Thread

Now that I have your attention:
I mean not *all* Atlanta fans are racist.

The @braves name, chop, and chant are 100% racist. As is Rob Manfred. As is anyone who perpetuates stereotypes that denigrate Natives.

#thetimeisnow #changethename
What people don't understand is that you can do and participate in things that are racist without being racist yourself. It's your understanding of what you are doing or participating in that makes the difference.
Lets talk about your Aunt Bea.

Aunt Bea loves baseball and is a huge ATL fan. She became a fan when they were the Boston Bees because it tickled her that they shared a name. Her fandom continued when they became the Boston @braves, then the Milwaukee braves, and now as Atlanta.

The other night the @Braves dimmed the lights so their fans could once again perform the disgusting tomahawk chop, lit by their phone flashlights and amplified by their faclke Native chant. This despite years of Natives opposing the chop as racist.
Speaking as a Mvskoke and Semvnole violently targeted by @Braves fans for vocally opposing the use of Native iconography by Atlanta I can tell you it doesn't matter what we say about it.

Yes. I described the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians using the word "pet" .

Since some Atlanta fans are using their cerebral cortices to remember the tomahawk chant instead of learning how actual words work I'll explain, not that they'll bother to admit they misunderstood.
English contains 8 parts of speech that have specific functions in a sentence: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and articles.

For our purposes we'll focus on nouns and adjectives.
This is the sentence Atlanta fans are upset with. The contentious portion is "pet tribe", which people wrongly believe I used to compare EBCI with animals.

"Atlanta can buy a pet tribe in the Eastern Band of Cherokee but until this ends and they #changethename they are too."

Today marks a major milestone in the Native-led campaign to end the use of Native mascots in sports.

After decades of advocacy from Native communities, & financial pressure from investors, the @WashingtonNFL team announced in July 2020 it would retire its racist name & mascot.
This week, new Washington Football Team President Jason Wright announced via the team’s blog that the new WFT branding would NOT use Native iconography, mascots, or imagery- including the name “Warriors.” This is a huge win for Native advocates.
The Washington Football Team isn’t the only team who has announced changes. In December 2020, the Cleveland @Indians announced they have decided to rebrand after the 2021 baseball season.

The students of @TheVLAcademy who just won their #ChangeTheName campaign will be celebrating their victory in Anna & Frederick Douglass Park in Chicago on Saturday (9/12) from 4-7pm. 15th Street & Albany. There will be free food, music & live performances. Image
This is the park where Rekia Boyd was killed by an off-duty cop. The park is important to people as a public space. Changing the name to Anna & Frederick Douglass Park is very meaningful. It's a win that was the result of 3 yrs of student-led organizing. blockclubchicago.org/2020/09/10/dou…
Some of you contributed and fundraised to support the homestretch of this campaign. Thank you for backing these youth up.

I'm getting requests for comments as a #NativeAmerican man regarding the Washington @Redskins.

Here is a #thread with my comments:

Yes - I want the team to #ChangeTheName.

Yes - I think the term is a racial slur.

These images I took at a @NFL game tailgate: do not honor me. ImageImage
Notice in the above photo, I blurred the faces of the people wearing items that they feel represent the @Redskins.

I blurred their faces because I do not want them to be targeted, ridiculed, called names or simply disrespected.

In other words: I don't want them treated like me.
Native regalia is an honor.

It is not a cartoon.

Every aspect has cultural meaning, the items have a special traditional and family connection.

Every bit of regalia is sacred.

Wearing it is an honor.

What these people are doing is dishonorable and disrespectful.
