Honestly I’ve never been prouder of a citation.
Truly glad my work contributed to the January 6 Committee Report. But overall the scant attention paid to the religious dimensions of the attack may prove a disservice to history. #CapitolSiegeReligion gathers hundreds of images of the day; UncivilReligion.org offers context.
Along with many others I said this just after the attack and stand by it almost two years later:

There are a lot of twists and turns here, but the gist is that Hotze, who has been criminally charged, allegedly bankrolled the ex-cop, through his nonprofit Liberty Center for God and Country, to find "voter fraud," and he settled on some random HVAC repairman. 3/x

Remarkable the way religion can be omitted from the official narrative of January 6. The tactical vest patch DOJ refers to here is a specific biblical reference, Psalm 144: "Praise be to the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle." #CapitolSiegeReligion

One month later, there’s still a part of #CapitolSiegeReligion I think needs more attention. Some religious media & evangelical leaders no doubt share a measure of the blame. But we can't lose sight of the fact that the attack was the result of thousands of individual choices...
To understand those choices I've been reading FBI charges, looking for mention of religious motives. That's how I found Mike Sparks, accused of being the first to enter the Capitol through a broken window. After the attack he declared Trump would remain president "in Jesus name."
The day charges against him were announced, I had a look at Sparks’ Facebook page, which has now gone dark. What I saw there was fascinating: a record of one man's transformation into an unlikely insurgent. A single chronicle of radicalization that may shed light on others.

2/Ahn was another of those prophesying that Trump would win a second term. Now, that has been shown to be false, he must explain it away. He is repeating the lie that the election was fraudulent. This lie by trusted Evangelical leaders entraps their followers.
3/Without addressing the evangelical (NAR belongs to this grp) piece of White Nationalism, we will not be able to deal w this problem. It is a matter of faith for them & the lie is reinforced by these powerful, influential, trusted pastors.
