Free to read article: 'The origins of ‘cakeism’: the British think tank debate over repatriating sovereignty & its impact on the UK’s Brexit strategy', exploring the notion the UK could keep certain EU benefits, or not suffer costs after Brexit.

The analysis demonstrates how the assumptions behind what article author Andrew Glencross calls #cakeism, originated after 1992 in policy circles associated with #TuftonStreet 'think tanks' & the Conservative Party, particularly the European Research Group (ERG).
They argued that a free-trade alternative to the EU was easy to put in place by simply disaggregating preferred elements of the single market from supranationalism.

This paragraph from the Sustainable Growth Commission's report on Scotland's future after independence is incredible. Have they learned nothing from Northern Ireland? Frictionless borders with both the UK and EU are not possible. #cakeism ImageImage
If independent Scotland became a member of the EU or the EEA, there would be a hard border between Scotland and the UK.
If independent Scotland pursued a less restrictive immigration policy than the UK, as is also proposed in the report, there would be border controls between Scotland and the UK. Image

When have we/the media stopped asking the difficult questions and are we damaging our cause?
A thread…..1/ #WATON #GE2019
2/ The #GE2019 is fought over big issues aside from Brexit. It’s a great tactic, if you don’t forget Brexit…..which is what is happening. We are living a re-hash of 2017. The B-word is reduced to slogans on the right and #Cakeism on the left. Best avoided by the leaders.
3/ It is almost as if they are not pressed for detail because we cynically believe we already know the answer they will give. But that just deprives us of ways to make our case.

Seems the EEA advocates think that EEA countries do not contribute to the EU budget. This is wrong. Check this link from the Norwegian Governments own pages:

Ideologists, huh?
Norway contributes to the EU budget in three major fields: to reduce social nd economic disparities, to take part in EU programmes (Horizon2020, Erasmus+, Galileo, Copernicus), and the Schengen cooperation.

Norway and other EEA countries’ contributions to the EU programmes (Horizon2020, Erasmus+, Galileo, Copernicus) are on foot with full member states.
There is no taking part in EU programmes without contributions to the budget.
