రైలు (#Train) అనగా ఒకదాని వెనుక ఒకటి తగిలించబడిన బోగీలతో పట్టాల మీద ప్రయాణిస్తూ, ప్రయాణీకులను లేదా సరుకులను ఒకచోటు నుంచి మరొక చోటుకి చేరవేసే ఒక రవాణా సాధనం. దీనిని గ్రాంథిక భాషలో ధూమశకటం అని కూడా అంటారు. ఈ రైళ్ళు పోయే మార్గమును రైలు మార్గము అంటారు.

ఈ రైళ్ళు పోయే మార్గమును రైలు మార్గము అంటారు. మొట్టమొదట ఆవిరి యంత్రాన్ని స్కాట్లాండు దేశానికి చెందిన జేమ్స్ వాట్ (James Watt) అనే శాస్త్రవేత్త పరిశోధనలు చేస్తూ "గ్లాస్ గో(Glasgow)" విశ్వవిద్యాలయంలో 1776లో కనుగొన్నాడు.
దీన్ని ఆధారంగా చేసుకొని అనేక మంది శాస్త్రవేత్తల కృషి ఫలితంగా రైలు ఇంజను, రైలు మార్గములు రూపొందించబడినవి. మొదట్లో దీనిని వస్తువులను చేరవేయడానికి మాత్రమే వాడేవారు. ఆ తర్వాత ప్రయాణీకులను చేరవేయడానికి కూడా ఉపయోగించడం మొదలు పెట్టారు. అప్పటి నుంచి రవాణా సాధనంగా ఇది బాగా ఉపయోగపడింది.
