Conservative Party has been split since the referendum. What the country and public are seeing is the ERG in action.#projectreality is now happening at a huge cost to the UK. It’s always everyone else’s fault and the ERG will always blame others for consequences of their actions
However moderate and blue worker Conservative MPs were not prepared to stand up to them when it mattered. They are reaping the consequences as is the nation. Attacking institutions is all ERG know. Europe, Parliament, Judiciary, OBR, Bank of England and on it goes
Meanwhile the croynism cult continues whether the rough awarding of contracts in #covid or #ethicsappointments or non appointments. #HouseofLords and unsuitable appointments. The decent fundamental values in the UK have been trashed for donations and loyalty to ERG.

The #Nationalist and anti-immigration agenda that drove #LeaveEU will face many (at least to them) unpleasant surprises in decades to come. If we are to trade with nations from all over the globe we must expect to relax immigration controls. I have no problem with that.
It reveals the abject incoherence in the #LeaveEU cohorts. Free traders, who advocate rigid borders on immigration (some motivated by aversion to diversity or race) are living in a dream world.
Moreover, those who despised a supranational Europe, are now facing serious scrutiny: #NorthernIreland is de facto part of #Europe. Ditto #Gibraltar. Those who claim #Scotland’s quest for Independence is misconceived will be accused of rank hypocrisy.

As I listened to Boris Johnson bellyaching about how the EU would treat them "unfairly" once they left the trading block it hit me: these people--let's call them "conservatives"--want greater economic arbitrage but always at someone else's expense, never their own.
Economic "dynamism" with a few rules they can bend to their advantage, or avoid altogether, is the conservative's aim. In short, #Brexit and the whole "conservative" zeitgeist revolves around the fundamental motivation of creating an environment in which it is easier to grift.
And, as they go about their grifting "conservatives" try to convince the populace that any lack of success among a majority is due to one's own personal failings, that it has nothing to do with a system engineered for their success, never yours.

So we're beginning to see the arguments being placed to justify an extension to the #Brexit transition.

"Anonymous Sources" just leaked that #Johnson will delay a "No Deal" decision until after the US Presidential election.

So how will this play out now? Some predictions⏬
Why is #Johnson in desperate need to delay #Brexit? The strategic reasons are here [], the TLDR is we're completely and utterly fooked due to the worst possible approach to negotiation.

And Public Finances slight problem #Brexit has 2x cost of #Covid19 🤒
Neither of the negotiation outcomes is acceptable for the Brexiteers. Neither is possible without a Northern Ireland solution.

I cover some of the problems for businesses of both in this Open Letter []

My question here is what happens next.

A thread to remind the conspiracy theorists regarding the UK referendum to leave the EU of some inconvenient facts they seem to have forgotten about, in particular focussing on actual interference & subsequently how the media continues to spin deceptive narratives. 1/9
The only foreign nationals known to have actively interfered in the referendum were @BarackObama - at the time the most powerful man on the planet & all of the #EU presidents at the time. Why does @carolecadwalla at conspiracy central never mention this? 2/9
Why is the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) trade deal which was @BarackObama's signature trade plan & would've meant millions of both US & EU jobs being shipped to China never brought up now after @realDonaldTrump binned it after becoming @POTUS & sparked a trade war? 3/9

Thread about the Hong Kong riots, why every single #Brexiteer should be on the side of bringing as many of the three million people as possible here to the UK, why many #Rejoiners will be against them, the importance of Sovereignty who else will be against it & why. 1/8
In order to preface this thread, I have been to Hong Kong & have many friends who live there. I am deeply concerned for their safety, as well as my inability to contact them directly
over Social Media due to the interference by the CCP & subsequent consequences to them. 2/8
The people of Hong Kong are peaceful, incredibly hard-working, very family oriented, law abiding & will integrate very easily into the UK way of life. They share the same Western outlook & values. They will benefit our society hugely as we will benefit from them. 3/8

THREAD | The #EU #Japan deal creates a trading zone comprising 635 million people and a third of global GDP. The agreement, which is also the first trade deal to include a specific commitment to the Paris Accords on climate change, will now come into force on 1 February 2019
Cheaper wine cheese for Japan, cheaper cars for the EU part of what the EU-Japan trade deal, now in force, means. The world's biggest such deal, it covers nearly a third of global GDP and 635 million people. ... It comes as a trade war rages between US and China continues

Re: #Australia not making any special trade or immigration deals with the UK after #Brexit, a friend explains it to me as the Australian desire not to be seen as resurrecting the "White Australia Policy", which is new to me:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Aus…
Basically the Aussies have had enough of their geographic peers beating then up over this matter, and will not compromise those relationships by giving special treatment to Britain.
Put differently: #Brexiteers should not expect help from down under, and they should have known it at the outset.

Three months later than usual @ONS have published UK National Accounts for 2018.

This series of tweets will draw attention to the financial mess #Brexit is creating for the United Kingdom.

We hear about UK national debt a lot, but not much on trade and UK balance of payments.
In their quarterly reports @ons have been warning us that UK trade deficit with EU was actually improving while trade with non-EU Rest of the World (ROW) was heading the opposite direction, despite #Brexiteers telling us that this is where our future lies!
@ONS So let's see what bad news #Brexit uncertainty has brought to our National Accounts for the last year 2018 just out:

"The UK trade deficit widened to 1.8% of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2018, from 1.2% in 2017, its highest since 2010"

EXC: So. @PhilipHammondUK has finally said it - the entire 'bucaneering Britain' #Brexit narrative is based on a fallacy.

The much anticipated free trade deals don't outweigh costs of barriers to trade with EU from #Brexit 1/Thread

Full interview:

telegraph.co.uk/politics/2019/
@PhilipHammondUK Think about that for a sec.

The whole row over the backstop and quitting the Customs Union is so we can win the right to make ourselves poorer.

So says the for Chancellor. They have "very limited" economic potential. /2
@PhilipHammondUK As you'd expect from 'Spreadsheet Phil' he's not making it up - he's run the numbers. (See research by LSE, HMT, @jdportes and others).

They are mad:

UPSIDE from FTAs all FTA is less than 0.5% additional GDP by 2030

DOWNSIDE of Canada minus deal? Negative 4-7% 'lost' GDP /3

#OpportunityCost is the aggregate net cost of doing something, vis a vis 'not doing it' at all.

The initial project, option & prospect of #Brexit came with huge opportunity costs, which were too easily pre-discounted as #ProjectFear. 1/
The initial #Leave case, dramatised by the #BorisBus, contended that UK could save its £350m pw #EU 'gross membership contribution' and pass that 'saving' straight to the #NHS - as 'additional funding'. 2/
The #Leave case focused on saving UK's #EU gross membership cost in favour of #NHS.

It ignored regular #EU annual contributions back into a multiplicity of UK projects, which would obviously be stopped, if we ceased membership.

[Thread] Interesting phenomenon brought to my attention by @karamballes regarding pro-Brexit accounts trying to rally followers on Twitter today. Firstly if you type "need to increase my pro-Brexit followers" on Twitter you'll see a lot of similar tweets #StopTheCoup
@karamballes So I examined the accounts and the retweets of any of the accounts that mentioned the phrase "need to increase my pro-Brexit followers". I then did some basic corpus linguistics analysis on those accounts, and again I found a few things quite bizarre.
@karamballes Understandably, #Brexit is the top word featuring in most biographies of the accounts. It appears in around 603 of the 3256 accounts. That's a lot, and could suggest such a call to arms really gets the issue-based Twitter accounts together. 145 accounts contain the word Trump

@JH_Brexit Yates doesn't come across v. well, but doesn't refer to the government forecast specifically.
Roughly extrapolating from your graph, Robobank's analysis might be indicating extremely low growth but perhaps not, I'll concede, negative growth overall during the coming decade. 1/?
@JH_Brexit But he indicates he is ultimately using his own analysis, so strawman challenge is a fail here.
But what I now want to do is challenge an assumption, not in models but in your interpretation of it: that the success of an economy is determined by a growing GDP. 2/?
@JH_Brexit Not saying that I don't want GDP to grow; quite the opposite. I'm suggesting that the difference that the difference between a 1.5% & 2.25% annual GDP growth rate (as an example) are much bigger than you imply in terms of their effects on the majority of the population 3/?

Ode to #Brexiteers on Brexit

We’re deluded.
We colluded,
With Russia and the Alt Right crowd.
And we won’t be cowed.

We’ll Brexit, the harder the better.
Ignoring the law by principle and letter.
It’s the EU’s legislation on ex-pat tax,
That really put up our backs.

2/11
The EU referendum was won by cheating and lies.
The fact that there are Remoaners is really no surprise.
All that stuff about Fair Play and Just Not Cricket,
That’s fine for sport, But not our cash!

Things #Remainers clearly still do not know about the #EU, although this could be such a huge thread as there are so many that I have tried to list only the most important ones, but please feel free to add anymore. Thread 1/11
The 1st thing was the framing of the referendum question to leave or to remain a binary once in a generation vote. Framing was crucial as by now we would have become a fully integrated member of the #EU had we voted to remain but we voted to leave despite the lies of Remain. 2/11
There would never have been a 2nd #EU referendum vote. As a fully integrated Eurozone member state your electorate has no say on the following five policy areas: (i) monetary policy, (ii) fiscal policy, (iii) trade policy, (iv) immigration policy & (v) industrial policy. 3/11
