The Red Crowned Roofed #turtle is a #species of #freshwater turtle endemic to South #Asia.

Historically the species was widespread in the #Ganga River, both in #India and #Bangladesh. Extirpated from most of its former range but currently it has dwindled a last surviving population of less than 500 adult individuals in the #wild.

Their population reduced drastically due to depredation of eggs and hatchlings by Golden #jackals, #habitat degradation due to #pollution and illegal sand mining in the floodplains. They are also extensively #poached for their meat and shell.

1. The failure of President @MBuhari ‘s administration to end the menace of criminal herdsmen and bandits throughout Nigeria (in both northern and southern states) has led to the stigmatization of the Fulani and other ethnic groups for the crimes of a few.
2. The failure of our authorities to deploy effective security and law enforcement action against these criminals has also created a dangerous vacuum that is increasingly filled, unsurprisingly, by self-defense measures by several communities across the country.
3. This could lead to reprisals based on ethnic profiling. In this context, I deplore the recent killings of innocent Nigerians of northern extraction in Oyo State.
So, following the supposed #AtyapPeaceAccord, today, 11 Sept, 2020, suspected #ArmedHerders attacked Mañyi-Mashin village, in Zamandabo ward, Atyap Chiefdom, Zangon Kataf LGA in the latest instalment of #SouthernKadunaMassacre
They fled only after #OperationSafeHeaven responded

By then, the attackers had methodically set the settlement of Mañyi-Mashin on fire burning most of the structures & looting & carting away much of what they chose not to burn. They also killed 2 ppl:

3 days earlier, on 8 Sept, another militia of #ArmedHerders reportedly attacked 3 Atyap youths from Atakmawei village, also in Zamandabo Ward.
