#ArtsandCrafts #Cotswolds #churches is Herbert North's last major work & one of his few churches. St. Catherine's, Blackwell, 1939-40, was strongly influenced by Lethaby's All Saints at Brockhampton, 1902, its white-painted roughcast & grouped narrow lights giving a Scandi feel. 
All 📷on this thread by Peter Jones, uo/ws, with thanks. The interior is stark with a compelling rhythm of sharply pointed arches, the only touches of colour being the painted sanctuary roof, candelabra & hanging rood. Pews & stalls may be glimpsed here.

North's A&C credentials are impeccable, though he is mainly known as a domestic architect with a strong body of work in Wales. At St. Catherine's, his fittings survive intact, inc. the stone font in the west end baptistry. Light pours through clear white glass.

#ArtsandCrafts #Cotswolds #churches Bit of a bust tonight as images are in short supply for the former Wesleyan chapel - the Trinity Memorial Church - in Blackwell, Worcs. It memorialises Henry Taylor of nearby villa, Leahyrst, with a simple Gothic design of c1880.

Stained glass appears to be still in situ, most of late C19 by T W Camm, before the Camm siblings introduced Arts & Crafts principles to their father's business. Paul Woodroffe was responsible for the S transept S window in 1913. See frustrating colourful blur through the arcade!
#ArtsandCrafts #Cotswolds #churches Bacton St. Faith has four Powells windows. Some confusion between sources as to location means I haven't established designers yet, but they are quite a nice group, installed over a decade, 1901-11

I am attempting to learn to love Powells as an exponent of Arts & Crafts. Of all the large commercial glass producers, they were the most innovative in stylistic & technical terms. These designs are rather looser than many of their contemporaries', with plainer backgrounds.
St. Firth's restoration came late, in 1892-4. Perhaps the new thinking on the value of historic fabric stayed the dreaded Nicholson hand, as he retained much C12-C15 work, rebuilding only the E wall, S porch & the chancel waggon roof, adding bosses & angels.
In 1876, the chancel of St John the Baptist's, Allington, in Wiltshire was decorated with stencil and freehand decoration, including orange trees, curtains and rosettes, in memory of Fulwar William Fowle, rector of the parish for 60 years.
More oranges appear in a charming 'trompe l'oeil' priest's seat with an orange tree painted in the recess.
The #artsandcrafts decorations, and the east window, were designed by the prestigious firm Heaton, Butler and Bayne.

El Palacio de Bellas Artes es un espacio cultural en la Ciudad de #México, construido en estilos #ArtNouveau y #ArtDeco. #Tiffany recibió el encargo de crear esta cortina de vidrio, única en el mundo, para que fuese el telón de un gran teatro.

Se exhibió como una sola vidriera en la Exposición Universal de 1900 en París, The Four Seasons es un ejemplo perfecto de la técnica favorita de #Tiffany. Se ordenaban de arriba a abajo y de izquierda a derecha. Veamos la primavera, en la parte superior izquierda:

La idea es sencilla y se ha repetido: las cuatro estaciones como símbolo del proceso/estructura del nacimiento, madurez y muerte de toda existencia.

El director fundador del museo, Henry #Cole, creó unas exposiciones con lo mejor en artes y ciencias del momento, pero quedaba un poco lejos, así que para atraer a los visitantes les anunció que disfrutarían de una primicia mundial: un restaurante dentro del museo.

Al entrar al Museo desde el jardín, el público no entraba a las galerías con exposiciones, sino por tres arcos con puertas de vidrio que conducían a un trío de salas de refrigerios, una manera de motivar a los visitantes y cubrir sus necesidades (hambre y sed).

Y ¿por qué? Porque está silla es " la silla", el concepto de la silla, el estilo moderno saliendo adelante desde la época victoriana.

#Burne_Jones fue hijo de artesano, un dorador tallista. Quiso ser religioso y estudió teología en Oxford, pero en la universidad conoció a #Morris (cómo no!), el cual lo convenció para que se dedicase al arte y al diseño, para lo cual siempre tuvo un inmenso talento.

En 1855 entró en el taller de #Rossetti, lo cual marcó su estilo, pero influido por sus viajes por Italia hizo que evolucionará hacia el estilo que le haría famoso. Se involucró, junto a Morris, en el renacimiento de las artesanías, especialmente de las vidrieras.

It’s from Theophilus’s De diversis artibus, compiled c.1125. This is before gesso was being used, as it instructs to take the clear part of the beaten egg white, and paint it on to the manuscript where the gold is to be applied
