My grandfather in Aug 1918 with his beloved sister Vera before going to France. My late grandfather would arrive for the Allied advance to the Nov 11 armistice. Like many, he would feel guilty for having survived. So many friends killed & wounded in the Great War. #RemembranceDay

In France it is remembered as #ArmisticeDay , in other allied countries it changed to #RemembranceDay and in the US was changed to #VeteransDay
The WWI was called initially optimistically The war to end all wars, today it is used more ironically as the WWII brought more devastation. It took me a lot to starting to get an idea of understanding the world before, during the 2 world wars, and after... ⤵️
On #ArmisticeDay we also recognise and honour the service of military surgeons, whose dedication pioneered major advancements in #medicine, and improved outcomes for veterans.

Never before #WWI had conflict brought such mass devastation in terms of death and injury: 37M military and civilian casualties. 16M dead and 21M wounded.

During 4 years of #WWI, military surgeons developed new techniques on the battlefield and in supporting hospitals.

when you see the mass graves, names of those fallen etched in Menin Gate memorial, does the reality hit of the bravery & courage shown by our forefathers. The Sikh Manifesto called for more monuments to mark the Sikh sacrifices and this is now becoming a reality all over the UK.
They signify the bravery & courage of 000s of Sikhs who travelled across the world to fight a greater tyrant & oppressor to liberate & free Europe. Sikhs fought & died keeping their Faith, Values & Sikh Identity. They stood tall in their Turbans & beards at times just Kirpans.
I chose to enlist in the U.S. Navy at age 18. From the age of 14 I knew that is what I wanted to do.
I didn’t join so I could hurt or bully anyone, I joined because I thought it was how I could best serve my country and my world. I was discharged for medical reasons and eventually found other ways to give back to the place I love.
Today I hold close all veterans out there who understand there is no greater victory than peace. That’s why #VeteransDay is also known as #ArmisticeDay:

So this whole #DonCherry poppy debacle puts my Saturday in perspective. Our decision to get out of the city yesterday for a little drive and some leaf peeping went sideways when we encountered White Canada in Schomberg, Ontario. *thread*
Now, Schomberg is a quaint little place about an hour outside Toronto. There’s a cute pub (@TheSchombergPub) with great pretzels. But just before we’d finished lunch, the conversation next to us between some older white men turned pretty randomly ugly.
One of them launched into a tirade about how #ArmisticeDay is not a provincial holiday in Ontario, and how the immigrants don’t respect how real Canadians died for the freedom and way of life they enjoy here, and how they unfairly get time off work to go into the corner and pray.

On 13 November, Charles IV issued a similar (Eckartsau) proclamation for #Hungary. In neither declaration did the emperor use the word 'abdication'. Indeed, he tried to reclaim the Hungarian throne twice in 1921. "I did not abdicate, and never will," he wrote to a confidant.

@thetimes Each year I find myself profoundly moved by the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the Cenotaph. Though it mainly commemorates events that happened before most of us were born, it speaks eloquently of the qualities we will need if we are to build a decent future.

People don't fight for war; they fight for peace.
They tried peace between 1918-1939. It didn't hold. So 7 years after the end of WW2, they created the European Coal & Steel Community, ensuring economic cooperation, which eventually became the EU. #Armistice100 #ArmisticeDay
