Short 🧵 & links for #ArmisticeDay , & the end of WW1. India today feels it had no stake in WW1, but in fact:

- There was an Indian signatory to the Armistice agreement at WW1's end; &

- Part of Germany's reparations payments were specifically earmarked for India ...
2: ... The Indian signatory was Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner, seen in @SirWilliamOrpen's painting of the signing, in Indian Army uniform behind US President Wilson, Clemenceau of France, Lloyd George of Britain (& from behind, Johannes Bell signing for Germany) ... /3
3: ... ... The above detail from Orpen's (much larger) painting is included in @GMortonJack's fine book, "The Indian Empire at War", which I enjoyed, together with Dr David Omissi's - embarrassed I still haven't picked up @dStephenB's, tho' I have Malik's own ... /4

My grandfather in Aug 1918 with his beloved sister Vera before going to France. My late grandfather would arrive for the Allied advance to the Nov 11 armistice. Like many, he would feel guilty for having survived. So many friends killed & wounded in the Great War. #RemembranceDay Image

On #ArmisticeDay we also recognise and honour the service of military surgeons, whose dedication pioneered major advancements in #medicine, and improved outcomes for veterans.

A thread about #PlasticSurgery and its origins on the battlefield

Never before #WWI had conflict brought such mass devastation in terms of death and injury: 37M military and civilian casualties. 16M dead and 21M wounded.

Image: the Western Front during WWI, generations of trenches & thousands of craters from mortars, artillery & detonations. Image
During 4 years of #WWI, military surgeons developed new techniques on the battlefield and in supporting hospitals.

In the war’s final 2 years, their work resulted in more survivors of injuries that would have previously proved mortal. Image

#LESTWEFORGET but for decades the immense Sikh contribution in both World Wars was airbrushed out of history & education.
Through hard work, research & campaigning by many orgs, we have re-told history & awoken the masses for the appropriate recognition. #Sikhs #armisticeday
when you see the mass graves, names of those fallen etched in Menin Gate memorial, does the reality hit of the bravery & courage shown by our forefathers. The Sikh Manifesto called for more monuments to mark the Sikh sacrifices and this is now becoming a reality all over the UK.
They signify the bravery & courage of 000s of Sikhs who travelled across the world to fight a greater tyrant & oppressor to liberate & free Europe. Sikhs fought & died keeping their Faith, Values & Sikh Identity. They stood tall in their Turbans & beards at times just Kirpans.

I chose to enlist in the U.S. Navy at age 18. From the age of 14 I knew that is what I wanted to do.
I didn’t join so I could hurt or bully anyone, I joined because I thought it was how I could best serve my country and my world. I was discharged for medical reasons and eventually found other ways to give back to the place I love.
Today I hold close all veterans out there who understand there is no greater victory than peace. That’s why #VeteransDay is also known as #ArmisticeDay:

#VeteransDay Was Originally #ArmisticeDay

#ArmisticeDay began in 1918 to celebrate The Day World Leaders Came Together To End #WWI- The 'War To End All Wars'- And The Idea Of Ending All #War

original.antiwar.com/gerry_condon/2…
"Over one hundred years ago the world celebrated #peace as a universal principle. #WWI had just ended and nations mourning their dead collectively called for an end to all #wars#ArmisticeDay was born and was designated as “a day to be dedicated to the cause...

So this whole #DonCherry poppy debacle puts my Saturday in perspective. Our decision to get out of the city yesterday for a little drive and some leaf peeping went sideways when we encountered White Canada in Schomberg, Ontario. *thread*
Now, Schomberg is a quaint little place about an hour outside Toronto. There’s a cute pub (@TheSchombergPub) with great pretzels. But just before we’d finished lunch, the conversation next to us between some older white men turned pretty randomly ugly.
One of them launched into a tirade about how #ArmisticeDay is not a provincial holiday in Ontario, and how the immigrants don’t respect how real Canadians died for the freedom and way of life they enjoy here, and how they unfairly get time off work to go into the corner and pray.

Nov. 11 1918: The last Austro-Hungarian Emperor Charles I signs a proclamation in which he "relinquish(ed) every participation in the administration of the State" marking the end of the 600-year rule of the Habsburgs over #Austria. #TodayInHistory #ArmisticeDay100 #Armistice100
On 13 November, Charles IV issued a similar (Eckartsau) proclamation for #Hungary. In neither declaration did the emperor use the word 'abdication'. Indeed, he tried to reclaim the Hungarian throne twice in 1921. "I did not abdicate, and never will," he wrote to a confidant.
Altogether the losses of Austria-Hungary during #WW1 can be estimated at around 2 million (excluding direct civilian war deaths). #ArmisticeDay100 #ArmisticeDay

Below is the text of an article I wrote for @thetimes some years ago about #ArmisticeDay and the importance of #remembrance. As we mark the 100th anniversary of #ArmisticeDay and the end of #WW1, it remains as relevant as ever. #ThankYou100 #LestWeForget Image
@thetimes Each year I find myself profoundly moved by the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the Cenotaph. Though it mainly commemorates events that happened before most of us were born, it speaks eloquently of the qualities we will need if we are to build a decent future.
@thetimes Originally known as Armistice Day, it was instituted to mark the moment when the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War in 1918, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

People don't fight for war; they fight for peace.
They tried peace between 1918-1939. It didn't hold. So 7 years after the end of WW2, they created the European Coal & Steel Community, ensuring economic cooperation, which eventually became the EU. #Armistice100 #ArmisticeDay
That's why I find those who use our war history as a reason FOR Brexit completely unacceptable. #Armistice100 #ArmisticeDay
