The #ActiveTO major road closures have been a success. Verified data counts from May, June, July and August show that #ActiveTO provided space for thousands of people to be physically active, contributing to overall wellbeing, along our busiest trails to help stop virus spread. Image
Averages from June, July & August weekends:
• 18,000 cyclists & 4,000 pedestrians on Lake Shore Blvd W
• 6,300 cyclists & 5,700 pedestrians on Lake Shore Blvd E
• 2,000 cyclists & 300 pedestrians on Bayview Ave. Plus 1,900 cyclists & 250 pedestrians on Don Valley Trail
For comparison, in 2018, the Richmond-Adelaide cycle tracks - very popular downtown routes - daily average and eight-hour counts showed that more than 4,700 cyclists travelled the routes between Bathurst Street and University Avenue.

Cycling is an essential part of Toronto’s integrated transportation network. I’m proud to proclaim #BikeMonth in the @cityoftoronto to celebrate cycling in our city. Image
Through the #ActiveTO program, the City has expanded its cycling network, while providing more room for people to safely get around our city during the #COVID19 pandemic. ImageImage
To further support cycling in our city, Toronto City Council approved the expansion of the cycling network plan this year. This plan along with the creation of #ActiveTO has resulted in the largest one-year expansion of on-street bike lanes in Toronto.

I know residents are looking for different ways to get outside and enjoy our city. That is why we have been working hard to launch programs that put health and safety first.
In July, we announced a new program, #DriveInTO, that helps event organizers safely set up large, temporary drive-in experiences throughout the summer. So far, the first three free #DriveInTO night have been a complete success. Learn more at: toronto.ca/DriveInTO
Other major City programs that continue to operate during Stage 3 – allowing residents to get out and safely enjoy our city – include:
#ActiveTO major road closures and quiet streets
#ParksPlayTO children’s recreation program
#SummerInTheSIX youth recreation program

Today, I am very pleased to share that our #ActiveTO cycling network is expanding again. We are ready to deliver not one, but two major downtown cycling network connections.
Last week, I announced that a new bikeway was ready to go in on University Avenue/Queen’s Park Crescent, from Adelaide Street to Bloor Street. The 2.3 kilometre safe, separated route was fully installed just a few days ago. Image
By the end of this week, about 1.5 kilometres of safe, separated bike lanes will be in place along Bloor Street, between Avenue Road and Sherbourne Street. Image

Today, I’m also pleased to announce that the #ActiveTO cycling network is ready to grow again. At my urging and approved by City Council, staff have prioritized cycling routes that provide a relief valve along transit lines and support our hospitals and frontline medical workers.
By the end of this week, we will have a safe, temporary bikeway almost fully in place along University Ave. This will help provide an alternative to transit and driving that we will need going forward as well as a safe, connected transportation option for our residents.
We continue to deliver more cycling routes quickly using temporary installations by repurposing curb lanes along several key corridors, many of which are already identified in the cycling network plan.

Today, we are moving ahead with our #ActiveTO plan to expand and connect our city’s bike network. This plan – which goes to City Council on Thursday – will create 40 kilometres of expanded and accelerated bike routes across the city.
We have to give people options to get around our city in a post-COVID-19 world. More options bring with them a number of health benefits for residents while helping businesses recover sooner by helping customers and employees get where they need to go safely.
Along with speeding up this year's existing projects, staff have answered our call to come forward with around 25km of new and temporary bikeways this year for a total of approximately 40km of on-street cycling lanes approved for accelerated installation early in the summer.

Our #ActiveTO cycling network plan proposes 40 kilometres of expanded and accelerated routes across the city.
An expanded cycling network aims to allow people on bikes to move around Toronto safely, to better connect those on bikes to the places they need to go, and to mirror major transit routes.
The proposed plan includes flexibility so that bikeway installations can be adjusted based on considerations such as changing traffic volumes, and the evolving needs of residents and businesses in the wake of the pandemic.
