The debate has been raging about the #PSL promotion and relegation playoffs and I must admit that I too have been in the “scrap it” camp. The arguments for and against were compelling so I decided to take a deeper look.

This is what I found

Thread 👇🏽
As usual, I referred to the official PSL reading material as a start, in this instance, The NSL Handbook.

The play-off rules are quite simple. The PSL team in 15th plays against 2nd and 3rd in the NFD in a mini tournament and the team which finishes top gets promoted.
In the most recent playoff, @BlackLeopardsFC easily won three matches in a row and have a goal difference of +5 ahead of their last match against TTM today.

But what does history tell us about the playoff and does it always favor the #PSL side?

Remember the thread which I turned into an article for @FARPostZA on the injuries resulting from lack of playing time?

Here's a quick thread on the steep spike in injuries leading up to and upon the iin the the resumption of the #PSL and the #AbsaPrem 👇🏽
In the first game back, Mpusana Tani of Bloem Celtic pulled his hamstring and had to go off. Both Celtic and Baroka had not reported any injuries or absentees prior to the resumption of football.
Onto Mamelodi Sundowns who saw SIX players injured or nursing strains when they returned to training. Ngcongca, Ngoma, Mabunda, Makgalwa, Lebusa and Seabi experienced some form of strain or injury.

I recently did a thread about coaches in South Africa and today we learned that @ChippaUnitedFC fired another coach 🙈🙄.

Here's a quick thread on how previous #Chippa coaches fared.

#AbsaPrem #PSL #Chippa Image
Chippa's first coach after promotion to the #PSL back in 2012 was Manqoba Mnqgithi. Mnqgithi lost his first two games against Sundowns and Free State Stars and was quickly shown the door in what was the first of many trigger happy moments for Image
Mnqgithi was replaced by Julius Dube who got them their first point after a draw with Black Leopards in September 2012. That one game proved to be his only game in a caretaker role which latest just under a month.

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m back with another thread, this time on coaching in the #PSL.

In this thread I will focus on SA coaches in the local game, average coaching age compared to Europe and give you some other interesting stats along the way

THREAD
As a start, I looked at how many South Africans have coached the big three #PSL teams. What I found was worrying.

I began by looking into #KaizerChiefs and it shocked me that Chiefs has only had ONE South African head coach since 1994 (@komphelasteve 2015-2018) 😳😰
In fact, @ErnstMiddendorp, the current Chiefs coach, first appeared on the local scene in 2005 to coach Kaizer Chiefs and has coached SIX different #PSL clubs thus far.

This is his second stint at Chiefs along with spells at Martitzburg, Chippa, Bloem Celtic, FS Stars & Arrows

Football is set for a return in South Africa and while we are all happy, I think we are in for a few shocks due to injury, fitness concerns and injuries. I've been looking at global trends around the return of sport and this is what I've found

Thread

#PSL #AbsaPrem
Note that the league has not divulged details on their exact plans for how the restart will happen. I am using global research to paint a picture of what we can expect in the #PSL and #AbsaPrem.

This is not cast in stone.

Happy #YouthDay #PSL football fans, I'm back with another piece of interesting research. So I went back and looked at crowd attendance at #AbsaPrem football matches

Here is what I found. THREAD 👇

#Amakhosi4Life #OnceAlways #DownsLive
It's a known fact that crowd attendance has been an issue for a long time. Others have mentioned price while travel time and safety are also major factors for a lot of fans. I will look at pure attendance numbers as well as jump into some research I found around #PSL attendance
To make things easier, I focused on the top 10 crowd attendance averages for the last 3 years. I then looked at the big three teams (Chiefs, Pirates and Downs) and tracked their average attendance record over the last ten years.

Study: Covid-19 to cost Premier League clubs UK£1bn in 2019/20

Deloitte warns top-flight sides will earn just half of matchday revenue next season.
Top-flight English soccer sides will face a permanent loss of UK£500 million (US$629 million) made up of rebates to broadcasters and the loss of matchday revenue from the suspension of competition, but that a further UK£500 million missing off the 2019/20 balance sheets
Clubs are forecast to earn around half of what they normally would in matchday revenue in the 2020/21 season, with that estimate of UK£350 million (US$409 million) set to be lost if supporters cannot return to stadiums at any stage in the season.

I recently did a thread on the importance of broadcast and sponsorship revenue to the #PSL and mentioned the ICASA intervention that led to the Siyaya deal falling through. I didn't go in depth into this but i thought i would take you through it now.

#AbsaPrem
As usual, my disclaimer. I am not an auditor, accountant or statistician nor am I a sports journalist. I am merely a concerned football fan who likes to read up on the financial side of sport and this is all publicly available information. Let us begin Image
It begins with the PSL thanking ICASA for the opportunity to make representations and making themselves available in the event that ICASA would hold public hearings on the discussion document.

Afternoon ladies and gentlemen. There's been lots of talk about #PSL club status selling and the exchange of licenses but there isn't that much known about the practice.

So I went digging and found some info on licensing and sale of league status in the #AbsaPrem
As usual, I will repost my disclaimer. I am not an auditor, accountant or statistician nor am I a sports journalist. I am merely a concerned football fan who likes to read up on the financial side of sport and this is all publicly available information. Let us begin
I started off by going through the 2019 National Soccer League (#PSL) handbook. This book is basically the constitution of the league. If you want to go through it yourself, click here: images.supersport.com/content/NSL-Ha…

I dont usually do speculation but let us speculate a bit on who could possibly come in as sponsor of the #PSL since the #AbsaPrem dela is done.
First the rumors. Its said that Multichoice will come in and take up that space. But they already pay the #PSL R600 million a year to broadcast PSL games. Why would they then come in and pay an additional R100 million just to put their name on it?
Some may say it strengthens their hand but i dont see how. They're also already involved through the MDC. As it is, they have great exposure and have all the content anyway. So why spend the additional money? I would love to see someone make a valid case for the expenditure.

The PSL losing Absa as a sponspr is a big deal. This has apparently been in the works for quite a while but here is a breakdown of how the Absa deal worked and how the money was used.

#AbsaPrem #PSL Image
Absa and the PSL signed an initial R500-million sponsorship deal in 2007. The deal was renewed again in August 2017 with the agreement being that Absa would pay the PSL R100 million a year for naming rights to the league.
The sponsorship is mainly used for club incentives like monthly grants to PSL teams amounting R2.5-million a month. The league winners and runners up also get their allocations of R15-million and R7.5-million respectively from the Absa sponsorship

Thank you all for your interest in the #AbsaPrem thread. As mentioned, I've also been going through the fortunes of @SAFA_net and today I delve into the latest Annual Financial Statements (AFS) of 2017-2018.

Thread! Image
To start, I will repost my disclaimer. I am not an auditor, accountant or statistician nor am I a financial journalist. I am merely a concerned football fan who likes to read up on the financial side of sport and this is all publicly available information. Let us begin Image
SAFA haven't released financials since 2017-18 and according to this report (sabc.co.za/sabc/annual-re…) are due to post a loss of around R74m for 2019. According to their 2018 results, current liabilities were R175m and current assets were R61m, pointing to serious liquidity issues Image

So I've been looking into the financials of both the #AbsaPrem and @SAFA_net and it's basically impossible for the PSL to survive without finishing the league while SAFA needs a bailout of some kind to have any chance of survival

Thread!
Before I dive in, some upfront info. I am not an auditor, accountant or statistician nor am I a financial journalist. I am merely a concerned football fan who likes to read up on the financial side of sport. PS, getting data in this country is like pulling hens teeth. Let's go.
To begin with, there are three main income streams for sports leagues and federations. These are broadcasting rights, commercial income (sponsorship & advertising) plus match day revenue (tickets & hospitality). There are also sometimes grants.. Onto the #AbsaPrem then..
