I had wanted an office in my home - where I can work and create content.
I had a choice- Keep the bed or make the place an office. I chose the office.
I was broke- this was my daily reality.
I cleared the room and got a plastic table!! My God I was so happy!

My first-ever academic talk was in English with my slides en français (proofed by a francophone friend I bribed with wine).
Lots of animations of models, carefully tech-checked earlier in the day, times & over-rehearsed... so of COURSE we had a hiccup & I had to go slideless.

I sounded like a kindergartener stumbling through an inadequate technical vocabulary with atrocious grammar, but in retrospect it was my rite of passage into Canadian academia.
