Recap of the first-ever @UAlbertaLaw access to justice technology competition!

Please RT and share with your #LegalTech friends!

First, an introduction to the competitors:
1/
Group 1 created a @docassemble interview that streamlined the criminal client intake process at @slsedmonton by, in some cases, weeks(!). A paper-based process happening at two physically disparate offices, between 3 different people (client, caseworker, and dayleader)... 2/
is now all handled inside a single @docassemble interview that generates an intake form identical to the ones currently used. The need was made obvious by covid, but the resulting tool is better than the pre-covid system. And the students involved and @slsedmonton are 3/

Juxtaposing strong statements by state bars & lawyer groups, including @ABAesq, with the lack of serious action, or frankly sustained attention, to access to justice raises squarely the question of whether bar leadership will ever practice what they preach./1
2/Lots of preaching, occasional resolutions, but where is the action? BIPOC communities suffer disproportionately from the lack of access to justice system, civil & admin. (Crim justice is a separate, but profound matter in its own right). Housing, family issues, incl custody &/2
3/domestic violence, employment, education, immigration. Many other issues. We KNOW about #A2J gap. We KNOW efforts to close it have been largely unsuccessfully, too often falling on deaf ears. And we have some good (if imperfect) mechanisms to tackle it. Including/3

1. THREAD: Why are sworn affidavits still a thing? I've seen no empirical evidence that documents sworn before a notary/lawyer are more reliable. Most tribunals admit unsworn statements & having held 100s of hearings I've noticed no difference, credibility-wise. #COVID19 #BCLaw
2. But what if people lie? If you're going to lie to a court or tribunal, it's unlikely that swearing a document in front of a notary is going to change that. There are serious statutory and common law consequences for misleading a judicial body, including fines/imprisonment.
3. But swearing an affidavit doesn't hurt, right? It hurts marginalized people. When I interviewed community legal advocates for a forthcoming paper on fee waivers, many pointed to the courts' requirement for a sworn affidavit as a major access barrier for low-income clients.

Usually, I tweet my Law in Rural America course @UMichLaw on Weds, but this week 2 students created FANTASTIC threads outlining what we're working on 👉🏻 Rural #LegalAid + #AccessToJustice. Read the threads, then ask @mvrleegoskv + @HannahPaton12 any Qs you may have! 💯 1/
First up, check out this super informative thread from @mvrleegoskv discussing articles from @lisareneepruitt and Hannah Haksgaard👇🏻 #WomenAlsoKnowLaw #RuralLaw #A2J 2/
Then, read this fantastic content from @HannahPaton12 who also contextualizes the academic readings with media sources for you to read. 🙌🏻 #WomenAlsoKnowLaw #RuralLaw #A2J (3/3 from me)

In this blog post, Andrew Arruda makes a point in favor of reregulation in the legal industry that often gets overlooked. Current regs do more than inhibit #A2J progress, they drive many to bad alternatives, what Andrew calls the "black market of legal services." 1/n
These purveyors prey on vulnerable clients, such as those who don't speak English well. Unregulated (& illegal) they often leave individuals and businesses in worse shape. We have seen this happen in other markets. Poor regulatory schemes can be fixed through reregulation ... 2/n
not deregulation (and certainly not through maintaining the status quo). Many states are now considering reregulation. Read how IAALS is helping drive change so that those who need #A2J most can get it.

I got interested in #legaltech after reading "Tomorrow's Lawyers" by @richardsusskind. In it, Susskind predicts what will happen to the legal industry over the next 20 years, but I wanted to know what people were working on *now*. Everyone I met said “Go to @wearelegalgeek”...
So I went to @wearelegalgeek! I attended all 3 days, and these are some thoughts on Day 1 from an outsider's perspective :). Also, I'm wrong frequently, so please feel free to call me out when you think I said something stupid :) (go easy on the company list I was movin fast)
Day 1 seemed to run like a normal conference (the few I've been to), with speakers, demos and corporate booths happening everywhere. Instead of listening to the awesome lineup of speakers ... I decided to talk to every company I possibly could lol:

A few thoughts on #a2j and the economic consequences of “expanding” it by making it easier for non-lawyers to participate in the system. Not necessarily brilliant or original. Just thinking.
Columnist @asymmetricinfo writes a lot about how path dependence has led us to a place where we will find it difficult to significantly lower healthcare costs because healthcare workers in the United States, notably doctors and nurses...
...have structured huge chunks of their lives around the idea that their professional services will have a certain market value. I’m not just talking about plastic surgeons on Rodeo Drive making their Lambo and alimony payments, I’m talking about assuming...

A #data informed look at how the #human experience of #lawyering has changed over time.

Just as #clients need better #value propositions, #law firms need better business models. Meaningful #legal #transformation will occur where the two intersect.

H/T to @augierakow @robsaccone for the post #inspirelegal 🤓 email chain that #inspired this tweetable.

(Bc I’m a tweetable factory. 🤷🏻‍♀️)
Another reaction to this @wihender post: we NEED to deal with #automation anxiety in #legal.

Legacy models of law practice aren’t built for the pace of #business and volume of #information of the #digital age.

More #hours from more #lawyers can’t be the default answer.
